Chapter 44

Penelope POV

I was anxious.
Annabeth and I sprinted to Chiron. He was practising his archery.
"Chiron!" Annabeth exclaimed, as we halted abruptly. "It's Rachel,"
Chiron lowered his bow, and slowly turned towards us. His eyes looked sad, and his forehead was creased with worry lines.
"What has happened?" He asked grimly.
"Rachel just gave two prophecies," Annabeth whispered urgently. Chiron's face slackened.
"Were they directed at someone? ...or was it a general prophecy?" Chiron asked with worry.
"We were just laughing, and then the tell-tale signs of an impending prophecy began, so we sat her in a chair. Then she began reciting the prophecies." Annabeth stated. Chiron made a confused face.
"That does tend to happen, sometimes. An unexpected propchecy." Chiron paused, and looked up at the sky thoughtfully. "What exactly did the Oracle of Delphi say?"
"Child saved from Death, A dangerous Fate you shall prevent, A lie without a breath, Shall cause murder in content." Annabeth paused, then turned to me. "Is that right?", She asked.
"I think it's word for word." I replied in awe. I suppose children of Athena are as intelligent as Persephone told me.
"Child saved from Death..." Annabeth pondered. "Who do you think that refers to?" She asked Chiron.
"Hmm.." He replied. "What was the second prophecy?"
"In the Valley of Life, One shall see what's left behind, And through a final sacrifice, A girl shall unlock her mind." Annabeth recited. "That one's more confusing than the previous one." She said. Chiron nodded.
"Thank you for informing me girl's." Chiron told us. "But I think the matter is clear."
Annabeth and I looked at eachother. What did he mean?
"The Oracle of Delphi has declared you a quest." He stated, shocking us both.
I haven't even been here that long, and now I have to go on a quest?
"Do you think the prophecy is about us?" Annabeth asked curiously. She didn't look as shocked as me. I guess she was just so used to going on quests.
"Annabeth, the first prophecy was directed at one of you. 'A dangerous Fate you shall prevent'. I don't think the Oracle would use second person, when the person she is directing isn't there." Chiron explained.
"Well, that's true.." Annabeth replied.
"Where do we go? I mean, we have no goal or destination.." I asked. The prophecies were just too confusing. The prophecies that Persephone used to say, in her stories of heroes, used to be a bit clearer and more direct. They at least told the hero where to start, most of the time.
"Three heroes have already left for a quest of their own. I have a feeling these prophecies are linked with Halyptia's prophecy. I suggest you follow them." Chiron said. "I'll explain Halyptia's story and quest to you. They are on an important journey."
So, Chiron explained everything to us. Everything about Halyptia's life, and about her past few weeks. Everything that had been happening. He told us that they were headed to meet Nyx, on Zeus's orders, to convince her to make an alliance with Olympus. He explained how Halyptia's life depended on the quest.
All the information was too much to take in. I didn't understand some parts.
A random thought struck me, how could the Olympians call themselves 'gods' if they didn't already know everything? Isn't a god supposed to be all-knowing? Why did they need to make Halyptia go on a quest to prove her innocence? Couldn't they just look into her thoughts or something?
I was probably over-thinking things. Maybe the Olympians weren't what I thought they were. Maybe they really are just powerful versions of humans.
I actually admire them. They have controlled this world for so long, without destroying it amidst their fights. I would've expected the world to be finished, if a argumentative family controled it.
"Penelope?" Annabeth shook my shoulder until I came out of my thoughts.
"Sorry, I was just wondering." I replied, as I felt myself blush a little. Chiron had been discussing something with Annabeth while I was thinking. They were planning what to do.
"Well, I'll let you two rest. Tommorrow you can pick a partner, the I'll arrange transport for you." Chiron said.
"Thanks," Annabeth replied. I smiled at him gratefully.
"So what should we do now?" I asked Annabeth, as Chiron trotted away.
"Let's get ready for the quest." Annabeth said excitedly. I remembered that her boyfriend was on the quest that we were going to follow. She was probably really happy now.
"I wonder who we should pick to take with us.." Annabeth said.

Zachary POV

"It was... a lady with a serpent's tail instead of two legs." I replied, shuddering at the memory.
After a little pause, I remembered something.
"I told you my name, but you didn't tell me yours." I said, curiously.
"Halyptia Melpomene." She relpied. I had never heard the name 'Halyptia' before.
"What does 'Halyptia' mean?" I asked. She looked upset.
"Well, in a word, it's supposed to mean 'Protected'." She replied. "Anyway, you wanted me to prove that we were demigods?" She said. I nodded.
"Are you gonna fly or something?! Or maybe turn into a giraffe?!" I asked. That would be so awesome!
"That's not my department, but Piper.." Halyptia pointed at the girl who was sleeping. "..has a boyfriend who can fly. And Percy.." She continued, pointing at the boy." ..has a friend who can shapeshift into animals."
"Man, that's tight!" I said, "I wonder what I can do!"
"Don't get too excited. I can't do anything." She stated, crushing my dreams. "Well, not that I know of.."
My eyes lit up again.
"If your parent is an Olympian, then you must have some sort of powers." I reasoned. She nodded in response.
"Well, Percy is going to prove that we are demigods." She said.
"How?" I asked. I was so excited, that I couldn't stop grinning. Halyptia laughed.
"Sorry, it's just... you're so funny." She explained. "I mean, in a good way." She added quickly.
I raised my eyebrow, and she just blushed.
"Anyway... Percy." She reminded. She knelt down by his side and shook his arm gently. "Percy, wake up." She whispered. The boy named Percy, sat up and rubbed the sleep out of his eyes.
"Is something wrong?" He frowned, looking at Halyptia. She looked up at me and Percy followed the movement. He seemed not to have known I was standing there.
"He told me that he sees through the Mist." Halyptia told him. "He wants proof that we are demigods."
She looked at Percy expectantly, and Percy nodded.
"Okay." He replied. "But I can't do anything without seawater.." He realized.
"Oh yeah," Halyptia remembered.
"We can just show him the pegasi." Percy said.
"That's a good idea," Halyptia replied. "..but first we need to take care of the snake lady."
"Snake lady?" Percy asked, bewildered.
"The thing that attacked Zachary was half woman and half serpent." Halyptia explained.
"Oh.." Percy replied. He didn't look surprised.
"Why do you all find this so normal?" I asked confusedly.
"Like I said, we are demigods. The myths about monsters and heroes are mostly real. Demigods fight them all the time." Halyptia said.
"I still don't know who you people are. What is your background? Where do you all live? Why haven't we ever heard of you people? Why are you here?" I asked, puzzled. It all just didn't make sense.
"You want to know everything?" Percy said. He looked at Halyptia warily.
"Okay, but this will take a while. I'll let Percy start." Halyptia said, as she stood up and walked over to the girl named Piper, "Let me just wake Piper up, so that she can tell her part too."
So they all explained everything to me. It took a couple of hours, but they explained their whole life stories to me, and when they were done, I felt like I knew everything about them and Camp Half Blood.
