thanks for waiting guys! is not a long post, but this is what i have for now.

Four flights up, the stairs ended under a green trapdoor.
Hazel shuddered. “That's never a good sign.”
I pulled the cord. The door swung down, and a wooden ladder clattered into place. The warm air from above smelled like mildew and rotten wood and something else. . .
“Dead rats!” Leo chimed in.
“Leo!” Piper scolded.
Katie sighed. She tossed the book into the middle. “I'm tired of getting interrupted.”
Travis, eager to impress Katie, reached for the book almost immediately.
Annabeth gasped. “I never knew that books and Travis Stoll were associated together!”
Conner stifled a laugh.
“SHUT UP!!” Travis snapped, his face turning red.
a smell I remembered from biology class. Reptiles. The smell of snakes.
Percy, Annabeth, Thalia, and Grover exchanged disgusted glance, since they had been in the attic before. Clarisse didn't seem so affected by it.
I held my breath and climbed. The attic was filled with Greek hero junk:
“THEY ARE NOT JUNK PERCY!!” Annabeth screamed.
Percy held up his hands. “Geesh! I was twelve!”
Reyna giggled. He looks sooooo cute when he's offended, she thought. Frank waved a hand over her face, not realizing that she had been staring.
“Uh... Reyna, are you okay?” Frank asked.
“Oh yeah! As okay as can be! Travis, continue,” she said, hoping her face wasn't turning red.
Travis nodded. “Okay!”
armor stands covered in cobwebs; once-bright shields pitted with rust; old leather steamer trunks plastered with stickers saying ITHAKA, CIRCE'S ISLE, and LAND OF THE AMAZONS.
Hazel jerked up. “Amazons!”
“Circe,” Percy mumbled. “Hate her.”
Annabeth giggled, recalling the time when Percy was turned into a guinea pig.
Reyna crossed her arms, offended. “Excuse me? Circe? Hate? She was a wonderful mistress who-”
“Who tried to sell me to a kindergarten class,” Percy finished. “Yep.”
By now, everyone was laughing.
“You're impossible!” she protested. Reyna crossed her arms and stalked out of the room.
Jason's eyes followed her. “I don't this that's such a good idea.”
Piper hooked her arm in Jason's. “You don't need to worry too much, Jason.”
Conner coughed and nudged his brother.
“Right!” Travis yelped. “Story time!”
One long table was stacked with glass jars filled with pickled things-
“What things?” Frank asked eagerly.
Jake looked at him, disgusted. “You don't want to know.”
“Too late,” Percy told him, as Travis began reading again.
severed hairy claws, huge yellow eyes, various other parts of monsters.
Frank gagged. “You're right.”
Hazel eyed him worriedly. “Are you okay?”
“Nah. He doesn't look too good,” Will said, yawning.
“What?!?”
“JK.”
Annabeth sighed. “Be quiet guys.”
A dusty mounted trophy on the wall looked like a giant snake's head, but with horns and a full set of shark's teeth. The plaque read, HYDRA HEAD #1, WOODSTOCK, N.Y., 1969.
“Woah!” Leo said. “The hydra? No way! You have GOT to show me that when we get out of here.”
Thalia gagged. “I can't stand this kid. At ALL.”
“Hey!”
By the windeow, sitting on a wooden tripod stool, was the most gruesome memento of all: a mummy.
Jason almost threw up. “You keep a mummy in your attic?!”
“Excuse me!” Rachel said indignantly. “She was a wonderful young woman, who was curse by a horrible god!”
Nico stood up. “Hey! He's not that bad!”
Percy coughed. “Bad? I think that just explains what Hades is.”
“Woah!” Hazel cut in. “That's my dad you're talking about.”
Rachel crossed her arms. “I stand with Percy.”
“I can't believe I'm saying this,” Thalia said, “but me too.”
“Me three!” Grover piped in.
Annabeth raised her hand. “Can't argue.”
Nico sat down in defeat. “I guess...”
Percy fist pumped. “Yes! I'm right!”
“For the first time,” Thalia grumbled.
“I heard that!”
Piper rolled her eyes.“Can we just get on with the story?!?”
“Sure,” Travis mumbled through a yawn.

Not the wrapped-in-cloth kind, but a human female body shriveled to a husk. Travis read.
“Okay first of all, real mummies are not like that at all,” Nico denied. “That is a stereotype created by the idiot movie-makers in Hollywood.”
“You would know, wouldn’t you Death Breath,” Thalia joked.
“Shut up, Electro!” Nico yelled.
Travis continued to read before a fight could break out.
She wore a tie-dyed sundress, lots of beaded necklaces, and a headband over long black hair. The skin of her face was thin and leathery over her skull, and her eyes were glassy white slits, as if the real eyes had been replaced by marbles; she’d been dead a long, long, time.
“Seventy years,” Rachel clarified.
“TMI,” Connor stated uncomfortably.
Looking at her sent chills up my back.
“Wimp,” Clarisse snorted.
Percy glared at her but didn’t say anything.
And that was before she sat up on her stool and opened her mouth. A green mist poured from the mummy’s mouth, coiling over the floor in thick tendrils, hissing like twenty thousand snakes. I stumbled over myself trying to get to the trap-slithering into one ear and coiling around my brain:
Travis began to use a creepy type of haunted voice.
I am the spirit of Delphi, speaker of the prophecies of Phoebus Apollo, slayer of the mighty Python. Approach, seeker, and ask.
“Will you stop with that voice?” Katie asked Travis, shuddering. “It’s creepy.”
“Sure thing, Kates,” Travis winked at her before reading again in a normal voice.
Will noticed Travis’ exchange and narrowed his eyes. He actually has a chance at winning Katie over. I have to stop him.
I wanted to say, No thanks, wrong door, just looking for the bathroom.
Various snickers filled the room.
But I forced myself to take a deep breath.
The mummy wasn’t alive. She was some kind of gruesome receptacle for something else, the power that was now swirling around me in green mist.

“The power that is now in me,” Rachel grinned.
“Yeah, that’s not exactly something to be proud of,” Chris said.
Rachel shrugged, not really caring.
But it’s presence didn’t feel evil, like my demonic math teacher Mrs. Dodds or the Minotaur. It felt more like the Three Fates I’d seen knitting the yarn outside the highway fruit stand: ancient, powerful, and definitely not human. But not particularly interested in killing me, either.
I got up the courage to ask, “What is my destiny?”

“Good thing she didn’t show you the Great Prophecy,” Annabeth told Percy.
Percy snorted. “I probably would have run away, screaming.”
None of his friends exactly blamed him. Most of them have heard the last prophecy before and they weren’t sure if they would have reacted any differently.
The mist swirled more thickly, collecting right in front of me and around the table with the pickled monster-part jars. Suddenly there were four men sitting around the table, playing cards. Their faces became clearer. It was smelly Gabe and his buddies.
Percy smiled evilly as he remembered what happened to Gabe and his buddies. Everyone scooted away from him slightly.
It was an illusion, made out of the mist.
Gabe turned toward me and spoke in the rasping voice of the Oracle: You shall go west, and face the god who has turned.
His buddy on the right looked up and said in the same voice: You shall find what was stolen, and see it safely returned.

“I knew there had to be more than two lines!” Grover argued.
“Sorry,” Percy apologized.
The guy on the left threw in two poker chips, then said: You shall be betrayed by one who calls you a friend.
Finally, Eddie, our building super, delivered the worst line of all: And you shall fail to save what matters most, in the end.

“Okay, I’m confused,” Hazel said. “The prophecy says that you’ll fail to save your mom, but you told me that your mom is in New York.”
“You’ll understand later,” Percy grinned knowingly.
The figures began to dissolve. At first I was too stunned to say anything, but as the mist retreated, coiling into a huge green serpent and slithering back into the mouth of the mummy, I cried, “Wait! What do you mean? What friend? What will I fail to save?”
“Doesn’t work like that Perce,” Rachel said grimly.
Percy sighed and muttered, “I know.”
The tail of the mist snake disappeared into the mummy’s mouth. She reclined back against the wall. Her mouth closed tight, as if it hadn’t been open in a hundred years. The attic was silent again, abandoned, nothing but a room full of mementoes.
“You know now that the mummy is gone, the attic’s not that bad of a place,” Connor commented.
I got the feeling that I could stand here until I had cobwebs, too, and I wouldn’t learn anything else.
My audience with the Oracle was over.

Clarisse snickered. “Even a mummy didn’t like you.”
Percy didn’t say anything. He just sat back on the couch and smiles smugly. All of a sudden, Clarisse was drenched head-to-toe in toilet water. It took Chris, Tyson, Grover, Jason, Leo, Annabeth, Reyna, and Thalia to hold Clarisse back while it took Nico, Frank, Hazel, Rachel, Katie, Travis, Connor, Will, and Jake to hold Percy back. Piper finally used her charmspeak and calmed everyone down.
“Sit,” Piper ordered both demigods.
Percy and Clarisse both sat on opposite couches obediently.
“Good,” Piper praised. “Travis! Read!”
Travis immediately grabbed the book and began to read.
“Well?” Chiron asked me.
I slumped into a chair at the pinochle table. “She said I would retrieve what was stolen.”
Grover sat forward, chewing excitedly on the remains of a Diet Coke can. “That’s great!”

“You were really enthusiastic back then, weren’t you?” Rachel observed.
Grover shrugged. “Maybe a little.”
“What did the Oracle say exactly?” Chiron pressed. “This is important.”
My ears were still tingling from the reptilian voice.

“She was not that scary,” Rachel denied.
“To you!” Anyone who’d seen the Oracle speak a prophecy yelled.
Rachel just rolled her eyes but didn’t say anything.
“She . . . she said I would go west and face a god who had turned. I would retrieve what was stolen and see it safely returned.”
“I knew it,” Grover said.
Chiron didn’t look satisfied. “Anything else?”
I didn’t want to tell him.
What friend would betray me? I didn’t have that many.

“More like you don’t have any,” Thalia joked.
Percy sent his cousin a death glare.
And the last line – I would fail to save what mattered most. What kind of Oracle would send me on a quest and tell me, Oh, by the way, you’ll fail.
“Apollo’s Oracle,” Rachel answered.
How could I confess that?”
“No,” I said. “That’s about it.”

“Liar,” Travis began.
“Liar,” Connor continued.
“Pants on fire,” Chris finished.
He studied my face.
“You shouldn’t have even bothered,” Travis said. “Chiron always knows when you’re lying.”
“Unfortunately,” Connor pouted.
“Very well, Percy. But know this: the Oracle’s words often have double meanings. Don’t dwell on them too much. The truth is not always clear until events come to pass.”
“Now he tells me,” Jason sighed. “That could have really helped during our quest.”
Leo and Piper nodded in agreement.
I got a feeling he knew I was holding back something bad, and he was trying to make me feel better.
“He always knows when he’s hiding something,” Annabeth said, looking pointedly at the three sons of Hermes.
“Okay,” I said, anxious to change topics. “So where do I go? Who’s the god in the west?”
“Ah, think, Percy,” Chiron said.

Thalia chuckled. “That won’t work. Percy never thinks.”
“Okay, that’s it! You want to go, Pinecone Face!” Percy challenged, standing up.
“Come at me, Kelp Head!” Thalia yelled.
Everyone groaned. “Not again!”
Clarisse couldn’t take it. She stood up and punched both the demigod and the Hunter in the face knocking them out.
“Problem solved,” Clarisse smirked. “Continue.”
“If Zeus and Poseidon weaken each other in a war, who stands to gain?”
“Somebody else who wants to take over?” I guessed.
“Yes, quite. Someone who harbors a grudge, who has been unhappy with his lot since the world was divided eons ago, whose kingdom would grow powerful with the deaths of millions. Someone who hates his brothers for forcing him into an oath to have no more children, an oath that both of them have now broken."

“Don’t say it,” Nico ordered.
No one dared to say it.
I thought about my dreams, the evil voice that had spoken fro under the ground. “Hades.”
“You said it,” Nico glared at Travis.
“B-but it’s in the book,” Travis nervously stammered. “I-I was just reading it. Someone else read.” Travis threw the book onto the coffee table.
Jason rolled his eyes but picked up the book and began to read.
Chiron nodded. “The Lord of the Dead is the only possibility.”
A scrap of aluminum dribbled out of Grover’s mouth. “Whoa, wait. Wh-what?”
“A fury came after Percy,” Chiron reminded him. “She watched the young man until she was sure of his identity, then trued to kill him. Furies obey only one lord: Hades.”
“Yes, but – but Hades hates all heroes,” Grover protested. “Especially if he has found out Percy is a so of Poseidon. . . .”

“Quit arguing, Scardy Goat,” Rachel teased.
Grover pouted, leaning back in his chair.
“A hellhound got into the forest,” Chiron continued. “Those can only be summoned from the Fields of Punishment, and it had to be summoned by someone within the camp. Hades must have a spy here. He must suspect Poseidon will try to use Percy to clear his name. Hades would very much like to kill this young half-blood before he can take on the quest.”
“Great,” I muttered. “That’s two major gods who want to kill me.”

“Pretty much,” Nico smirked at his two still unconscious cousins.
“But a quest to . . .” Grover swallowed. “I mean, couldn’t the master bolt be in some place like Maine? Maine’s very nice this time of year.”
“You just want to go to Maine because you can look at the shrubbery and not get in trouble,” Rachel pointed out.
“That is so not true,” Grover denied. “And I’m not scared of Juniper.”
Rachel didn’t say anything. She just chuckled and shook her head.
“Hades sent a minion to steal the master bolt,” Chiron insisted. “He hid it in the Underworld, knowing full well that Zeus would blame Poseidon. I don’t pretend to understand the Lord of the Dead’s motives perfectly, or why he chose this time to start a war, but one thing is certain. Percy must go to the Underworld, find the master bolt, and reveal the truth.”
A strange fire burned in my stomach. The weirdest thing was: it wasn’t fear. It was anticipation. The desire for revenge. Hades had tried to kill me three times so far, with the Fury, the Minotaur, and the hellhound. It was his fault my mother had disappeared in a flash of light. Now he was trying to frame me and my dad for a theft we hadn’t committed.
I was ready to take him on.

“Or make an even bigger enemy out of him,” Annabeth mumbled, remembering how Percy made Hades hate him instantly.
Besides, if my mother was in the Underworld . . .
Whoa, boy, said the small part of my brain that was still sane.

“The very small part,” Rachel teased.
A lot of Percy’s friends nodded in agreement. Percy was slightly insane sometimes.
You’re a kid. Hades is a god.
Grover was trembling. He’d started eating pinochle cards like potato chips.

“I love potato chips,” Frank said, smiling at the bag of potato chips he was currently eating.
Frank glanced up and noticed everyone – but the two passed out demigods – staring at him. “Don’t judge me,” Frank pleaded, eating another chip.
Everyone turned back to Jason and he took that as his cue to begin reading again.
The poor guy needed to complete a quest with me so he could get his searcher’s license, whatever that was, but how could I ask him to do this quest, especially when the Oracle said I was destined to fail? This was suicide.
“Did I look that scared?” Grover bleated.
Annabeth nodded. “Truthfully, yes.”
“Look, if we know it’s Hades,” I told Chiron, “why can’t we just tell the other gods? Zeus or Poseidon could go down to the Underworld and bust some heads.”
“Suspecting and knowing are not the same,” Chiron said. “Besides, even if the other gods suspect hades – and I imagine Poseidon does – they couldn’t retrieve the bolt themselves. Gods cannot cross each other’s territories except by invitation. That is another ancient rule. Heroes, on the other hand, have certain privileges. They can go anywhere, challenge anyone, as long as they’re bold enough and strong enough to do it."

Oh, Percy is definitely bold enough and strong enough, Reyna thought as she watched the unconscious demigod’s steady breathing.
No god can be held responsible for a hero’s actions. Why do you think the gods always operate through humans?”
“You’re saying I’m being used.”
“I’m saying it’s no accident Poseidon has claimed you now. It’s a very risky gamble, but he’s in a desperate situation. He needs you.”

“You know when Chiron says stuff like that it makes it twice as hard to stay mad at our parents,” Jake observed.
A lot of the demigods nodded in agreement.
“I have a special talent for staying mad at my dad,” Rachel said smugly.
My dad needs me.
Emotions rolled around inside me like bits of glass in a kaleidoscope. I didn’t know whether to feel resentful or grateful or happy or angry. Poseidon had ignored me for twelve years. Now suddenly he needed me.
I looked at Chiron. “You’ve known I was Poseidon’s son all along, haven’t you?”

“Most likely,” Will said.
“I’ve had my suspicions. As I said . . . I’ve spoken to the Oracle, too.”
I got the feeling there was a lot he wasn’t telling me about his prophecy, but I decided I couldn’t worry about that right now. After all, I was holding back information too.
“So let me get this straight,” I said. “I’m supposed go to the Underworld and confront the Lord of the Dead.”
“Check,” Chiron said.
“Find the most powerful weapon in the universe.”
“Check.”
“And get it back to Olympus before the summer solstice, in ten days.”

“That’s about it,” Hazel said.
“That’s about right.”
I looked at Grover, who gulped down the ace of hearts.
“Did I mention that Maine is very nice this time of year?” he asked weakly.

Clarisse rolled her eyes and scoffed. “Wimp.”
Suddenly a couple of groans filled the room.
Everyone glanced down at the floor to see Thalia and Percy sitting up weakly.
“What happened?” Percy murmured.
“You two were about to fight so Clarisse punched you and you both were knocked out,” Annabeth stated.
Percy and Thalia glared at each other but didn’t say anything. They tiredly got up and collapsed on the couches. Percy put his head on Annabeth’s weakly and said, “Continue.”
“You don’t have to go,” I told him. “I can’t ask that of you.”
“Brother nice,” Tyson said.
Percy sent his brother a weak smile and nodded.
“Oh . . .” He shifted his hooves. “No . . . it’s just that satyrs and underground places . . . well . . .”
He took a deep breath, then stood, brushing the shredded cards and aluminum bits off his T-shirt. “You saved my life, Percy. If . . . if you’re serious about wanting me along, I won’t let you down.”
I felt so relieved I wanted to cry, though I didn’t think that would be very heroic.

“Not necessarily, Prissy,” Clarisse stated.
“Whatever Clarisse,” Percy said, rolling his eyes.
Grover was the only friend I’d ever had for longer than a few months.
“Not anymore,” Percy whispered to Annabeth, nuzzling his head into her neck.
Annabeth ran her finger through his thin hair while smiling. They’d been apart for way to long.
I wasn’t sure what good a satyr could do against the forces of the dead, but I felt better knowing he’d be with me.
“All the way, G-man.” I turned to Chiron. “So where do we go? The Oracle just said to go west.”
“The entrance to the Underworld is always in the west. It moves from age to age, just like Olympus. Right now, of course, it’s in America.”

“That’s specific.” Leo rolled his eyes.
Piper smacked his head. “Shut up, Valdez.”
“Whatever, McLean.” Leo showed off his wild grin.
“Where?”
Chiron looked surprised. “I thought that would be obvious enough. The entrance to the Underworld is in Los Angeles.”
“Oh,” I said. “Naturally. So we just get on a plane-”
“No!” Grover shrieked. “Percy, what are you thinking? Have you ever been on a plane in your life?”
I shook my head, feeling embarrassed. My mom had never taken me anywhere by plane. She’d always said we didn’t have the money. Besides, her parents had died in a plane crash.

“How many planes have you been on?” Reyna asked.
“Two,” Percy answered.
“What!” Annabeth shrieked. “I thought you were only on it once? Do you know how dangerous that wa-”
Percy shut up his girlfriend by giving her a kiss on the lips. “I am very aware how dangerous that was. But I survived, didn’t I?”
“If you hadn’t, I would have gone to the Underworld, brought you back to life, and killed you again,” Annabeth told him.
“I wouldn’t have put it past you,” Percy said.
“Percy, think,” Chiron said. “You are the son of the Sea God. Your father’s biggest rival is Zeus, Lord of the Sky. Your mother knew better than to trust you in an airplane. You would be in Zeus’s domain. You would never come down again alive.”
Not necessarily, Percy thought.
Overhead, lightning crackled. Thunder boomed.
“Okay,” I said, determined not to look at the storm. “So, I’ll travel overland.”
“That’s right,” Chiron said. “Two companions may accompany you. Grover is one. The other has already volunteered, if you will accept her help.”

“Such a mystery as to who that could be,” Thalia said, looking at Annabeth.
“Gee,” I said, feigning surprise. “Who else would be stupid enough to volunteer for a quest like this?”
The air shimmered behind Chiron.
Annabeth became visible, stuffing her Yankees cap into her back pocket.
“I’ve been waiting a long time for a quest, seaweed brain,” she said. “Athena is no fan of Poseidon, but if you’re going to save the world, I’m the best person to keep you from messing up.”

“She’s got a point there,” Katie said. “The boys always mess up.”
“Hey!” All of the boys said offended.
“If you do say so yourself,” I said. “I suppose you have a plan, wise girl.”
“Hey! You stole that from me!” Clarisse yelled.
Her cheeks colored. “Do you want my help or not?”
The truth was, I did. I needed all the help I could get.
“A trio,” I said. “That’ll work.”
“Excellent,” Chiron said. “This afternoon, we can take you as far as the bus terminal in Manhattan. After that, you are on your own.”

“Of course we are,” Percy mumbled.
Lightning flashed. Rain poured down on the meadows that were never supposed to have violent weather.
“No time to waste,” Chiron said. “I think you should all get packing.”

“And that’s the end of the chapter,” Jason said. “Next is chapter ten. I Ruin A Perfectly Good Bus.”
