With her deep tan and her curly blond hair, she was almost exactly what I thought a stereotypical California girl would look like, except her eyes ruined the image.
“Excuse me!” Annabeth turned towards Percy. “How do my eyes ruin the image?”
“Relax. I love your eyes. I love your hair. I love everything about you,” Percy admitted moving a hair behind her ears.
“I really need a girlfriend,” Leo pouted.
All if the single girls scooted away from him.
They were startling gay, like storm clouds; pretty, but intimidating, too, as if she were analyzing the best way to take me down in a fight.
“I probably was,” Annabeth said.
“I wouldn’t be surprised,” Percy added.
She glanced at the minotaur horn in my hands, then back at me. I imagined she was going to say, You killed a minotaur! or Wow, you’re so awesome! or something like that.
Annabeth rolled her eyes.
“Cocky much?” Nico wondered sarcastically.
“Yeah, you must not have known Annabeth very well,” Thalia joked.
Percy just shook his head.
Instead she said, “You drool when you sleep.”
Everyone cracked up laughing.
“Annabeth, be honest. Did you watch Percy when he slept?” Travis asked jokingly.
He ended up groaning from being kicked in his soft spot.
Then she sprinted off down the lawn, her blond hair flying behind her. “So,” I said, anxious to change the subject. “You, uh, work here, Mr. Brunner?”
“Not Mr. Brunner,” Will said.
“Not Mr. Brunner,” the ex-Mr. Brunner said.
“Creepy,” Conner sang, glancing at Will.
“I’m afraid that was a pseudonym.
“What’s a pseudonym?” Leo asked.
Annabeth pulled out her laptop to set up a PowerPoint.
“On second thought,” Leo said nervously. “Percy, you got a two second explanation?”
“It’s like a fake name for someone who doesn’t want you to know their real one,” Percy said.
Annabeth glared at him when Leo smiled relieved.
You may call me Chiron.” “Okay.” Totally confused, I looked at the director. “And Mr. D . . . does that stand for something?” Mr. D stopped shuffling his cards. He looked at me like I’d belched loudly. “Young man, names are powerful things. You don’t just go around using them for no reason.”
“Yeah, Percy.” Nico looked at him pointedly.
“At least I didn’t call Dionysus the ‘Wine Dude,’” Percy reminded him.
Nico shrugged, glaring at Percy.
“Oh. Right. Sorry.” “I must say, Percy,” Chiron-Brunner broke in. “I’m glad to see you alive. It’s been a long time since I’ve made a house call to a potential camper. I’d hate to think I’ve wasted my time.”
“I doubt he thinks that anymore,” Chris chuckled.
“Why?” Jason asked.
“You’ll-”
“Don’t say ‘you’ll see,’” Jason glared at Rachel.
“Okay.” Rachel waited a few minutes before saying, “You’ll see.”
Jason groaned.
“House call?” “My year at Yancy Academy, to instruct you. We have satyrs at most schools, of course, keeping a lookout. But Grover alerted me as soon as he met you. He sensed you were something special, so I decided to come upstate. I convinced the other Latin teacher to . . . Ah, take a leave of absence.”
“What did Chiron do to him?” Thalia asked curious.
We all turned to Grover.
“Oh, don’t go thinking the worst,” Grover said. “He just had Mr. Dickerson take a vacation.”
Everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
I tried to remember the beginning of the school year. It seemed like so long ago, but I did have a fuzzy memory of there being another Latin teacher my first week of Yancy. Then, without explanation, he had disappeared and Mr. Brunner had taken the class. “You came to Yancy just to teach me?” I asked.
“No. He went to teach Nancy Bobofit,” Clarisse grumbled sarcastically.
Percy glared at her.
Chiron nodded. “Honestly, I wasn’t sure about you at first. We contacted your mother, let her know we were keeping an eye on you in case you were ready for Camp Half-Blood. But you still had so much to learn. Nevertheless, you made it here alive and that’s always the first test.”
“That’s probably the only test you’ve ever passed,” Frank joked.
Percy looked like he wanted to argue but seemed to decide against it.
“Grover,” Mr. D said impatiently, “are you playing or not?” “Yes, sir!” Grover trembled as he took the fourth chair, though I didn’t know why he should be so afraid of a pudgy little man in a tiger-print Hawaiian shirt.
“Blah-ha-ha,” Grover bleated shocked. “Don’t let Mr. D hear you say that.”
“You do know how to play pinochle?” Mr. D eyed me suspiciously.
“Nope,” Leo said happily.
“I’m afraid not,” I said. “I’m afraid not, sir,” he said. “Sir,” I repeated. I was liking the camp director less and less.
“Same as everyone,” Jake said.
[/b]“Well,” he told me, “it is, along with gladiator fighting and Pac-Man, one of the greatest games ever invented by humans. I would expect all civilized young men to know the rules.”[/b]
“Well, that would make sense since Percy is not civilized,” Thalia pointed out.
Percy ended up having a glaring contest with his cousin.
“I’m sure the boy can learn,” Chiron said.
“Actually I never did,” Percy said.
“Please,” Percy said, “what is this place? What am I doing here? Mr. Brun-Chiron-why would you go to Yancy Academy just to teach me?”
“I asked the same question,” Clarisse grumbled.
Mr. D snorted. “I asked the same question.” The camp director dealt the cards. Grover flinched every time one landed in his pile.
“Wimp,” Clarisse muttered.
Grover glared at Clarisse for a minute before turning back to Frank and waited for him to continue.
Chiron smiled at me sympathetically, the way he used to in Latin class, as if to let me know that no matter what my average was, I was his star student. He expected me to have the right answer. “Percy,” he said. “Did your mother tell you nothing?”
“Nope,” Hazel said.
“She said . . .” I remembered her sad eyes, looking out over the sea. “She told me she was afraid to send me here, even though my father had wanted her to. She said that once I was here, I probably couldn’t leave. She wanted to keep me close to her.”
Katie frowned sadly remembering how her dad tried doing the same thing.
Travis seemed to notice, he leaned closer and whispered, “Everything alright?”
Katie nodded distractingly. “Yeah, everything’s fine.”
“Typical,” Mr. D said. “That’s how they usually get killed. Young man, are you bidding or not?”
“I love Mr. D’s sensitivity,” Leo said sarcastically.
“That was Dionysus for you,” Nico nodded.
“Wait, that was Dionysus?” Leo asked confused.
*Cure Face palm*
“Idiot,” Piper said, truthfully expecting nonetheless from Leo.
“What?” I asked. He explained, impatiently, how you bid in pinochle, and so I did.
Katie gasped, and turned to Percy, “You actually did something Mr. D told you to?”
A lot of people broke out snickering, while Percy just rolled his eyes.
“I’m afraid there’s too much to tell,” Chiron said. “I’m afraid our usual orientation film won’t be sufficient.”
“No fair,” Nico whined. “You didn’t have to see the film and I did?”
Percy nodded.
Nico glared at his cousin for a second before turning back to Frank.
“Orientation film?” I asked. “No,” Chiron decided. “Well, Percy. You know your friend Grover is a satyr. You know”-he pointed to the horn in the shoe box-“that you have killed the Minotaur. No small feat, either, lad. What you may not know is that great powers are at work in your life. Gods-the forces you call the Greek gods- are very much alive.”
“Uh-oh. Can’t wait to hear what Percy has to say,” Frank muttered, glancing at his friend.
I stared at the others around the table.
“That’s not what I was expecting,” Thalia admitted.
I waited for someone to yell, Not! But all I got was Mr. D yelling, “Oh, a royal marriage. Trick! Trick!” He cackled as he tallied up his points.
“I was expecting that,” Thalia nodded proud that she was right.
“Mr. D,” Grover asked timidly, “if you’re not going to eat it, could I have your Diet Coke can?”
“Would a god really eat a pop can?” Reyna wondered aloud.
“Dionysus has done weirder things,” Grover announced.
The older Greek campers all nodded in agreement.
“Now I’m craving coke,” Hazer admitted.
“I think there’s some in the fridge,” Katie said.
Hazel ran towards the kitchen with super speed.
“How about we all take a break?” Frank said, closing the book and putting it on the coffee table.
Everyone nodded in agreement as the all got up to leave for separate rooms.
