John loved them, even died for them. He did the best he could.

He didn't have much of a choice. He knew that the demon had done something to Sam and that his boys would never, ever be safe in a "normal" life. He did his best to keep them safe.

Though Dean at first wanted the whole "apple pie family life", his dad cared and it was the same way about Sam when he went to college. John just wanted his kids to be safe from the evil and carry on his and Mary's legacy. Actually, without Mary and John getting married (Mary was planning to quit the business and settle down anyway when she got married and pregnant.), Sam and Dean wouldn't have come this far. John didn't want Mary to die incomplete, and also truth be told he may have also wanted to kill the yellow-eyed demon anyway for murdering his wife. Can you blame him? Sure, the life that Sam and Dean wanted to settle down is sweet that they wanted, but without John teaching them this stuff from Mary and his journal, Sam and Dean would be victims of the supernatural and instead of us fans watching two sexy hot awesome kick ass demon hunters, we would be seeing the Ghost Facers dorks. Though some may argue about the boys wanting a normal lifestyle, John pushed and pushed for them to be protected and safe. At least they aren't like a bunch of fainting goats running around scared of their own shadows...lol! :).

it's between yes/no but i said yes because he stool their lifes...i know that they must kill demons and above all azazel but he forgot that they're kids first and not hunters..what's that for life for 2 boys...of course, no hunters no spn..lol...but i don't understand that a father can do that to his sons...he'ld can hunt alone and let his boys go to school and had a life and after that let them chose between our life and his life...like adult and not put them on this like that...

He did the best he could, he protected them. They would have been thrown into the life one way or another eventually, at least this way they were prepared for it.

John and his decisions are just too complex for a simple yes or no.

Do I think it was harsh and not the best environment for two young boys? Yes. Do I think that it damaged them for life? Yes. Do I think that John could've been a better father? Yes.

Do I think that John raised them that way because he was trying to protect them? Yes. Do I think his training has saved their lives on many occasions? Yes. Do I think that John loved his sons? Yes.

John could have handled things better but everything he did was out of a desire to protect his sons. So although I think that it was wrong of him to handle his sons the way he did [placing so much responsibility on Dean and trying to control Sam too much- as well as being such a paranoid, close-mouthed SOB] I don't think he was necessarily wrong to raise them as hunters, given his situation and the things he was dealing with.

As, well, pretty much always I'm inclined to agree with fanfly. John's life became extremely complex the moment he met Mary Winchester. Of course, considering the fact that his sons were destined to be Michael and Lucifer's vessels since long before they were even born, his life was destined to be complicated long before that. Not that he knew that, of course (he could have, but I'm doubting his knowledge stemmed quite that far, or else his warning to Dean would probably have been less vague). Anyway, I'm getting distracted. Like I said, I agree with fanfly. John and his decisions were extremely complex. I say no because I feel like a lot in this fandom people like to just label John a shitty father and get on with it, but I don't really agree with that, at all. John did the best that he knew how given the situation he was in. Would any of us reacted the same? It's possible, who knows, we aren't in that situation (btw I'm totally still aware this is only a TV show, this is merely a hypothetical). My point is, really just furthering what fanfly said. John is complex, his decisions, his reasons, his mind, his heart, hell everything about the man is complex. I'm not sure I really ever did or will understand what the hell John was thinking half the time (not that the writers give us much to go on). All I do know is that John loved his sons and any mistakes he made (and there were plenty) were out of love and any wrongs he committed (again many) were out of that same love, which is best friends with fear, confusion, desperation, panic, and a need to protect.

Anyway, I feel like none of what I said had anything to do with this question so I think I'll just stop typing now. I agree with fanfly. I really could have just typed that and been done with it.

I really can't decide so I just picked one, because I'm probably leaning on this one more than the "no".
I do have a bit of dislike for John for the way he treated Sam, so maybe that's impairing my judgement... :/
