Recolour - bad
Mary-Sue/Gary-Stu - bad [whilst one could argue for years over the definition of a mary-sue since, in reality, it is simply the reader's perception of a good oder bad character]

and the Artikel before THAT.
Personally, I believe, if it's an idea you've come up with, go do the thing and have fun.
