Aria Montgomery is portrayed Von Lucy Hale. She moves back to Rosewood with her mother, Ella, father, Byron, and younger brother, Mike, after a Jahr long absence in Iceland. She is secretly tormented after discovering her father having an affair with one of his students. After meeting a man named Ezra Fitz and discovering that he's her English teacher, Aria starts a secret affair with him. Aria and Ezra struggle with the forbidden nature of their relationship as Aria is tormented Von keeping the secret of her father's past affair from her mother. Just as Aria decides to tell the truth, she finds that "A" has beaten her to it in a tell-all letter to Ella.
Hanna Marin
Hanna Marin is portrayed Von Ashley Benson. She was Alison's lackey and has taken Alison's place as the "It Girl," along with former loser, Mona Vanderwaal. Alison used to constantly tease Hanna about her weight, which in turn made Hanna bulimic, and is something "A" taunts Hanna about. Hanna shoplifts for attention from her workaholic mother, Ashley, and her father, who left her and her mother a Jahr ago, along with Mona. When Hanna is caught, Hanna's image-conscious mother sleeps with the police officer, Darren Wilden, to get the charges drop and avoid scandal. Hanna's chastity boyfriend, Sean, vows his virginity, much to Hanna's anger, which she takes out Von stealing and crashing Sean's car. And suddenly, Hanna's absent father returns with a fiancée and a seemingly perfect stepdaughter and forces Hanna to take responsibility Von getting a job at Sean's mother's office.
Spencer Hastings
Spencer Hastings is portrayed Von Troian Bellisario. Spencer is smart, pretty, and always is in the shadows of her smarter and prettier older sister, Melissa, who's newly-engaged to a British hottie, Wren, who seems to have Mehr of an interest in Spencer than in Melissa. Spencer finds herself increasingly attracted to her sister's fiancé, Wren, whom "A" warns Spencer not to KISS oder "A" will tell. Spencer and Wren do KISS and are caught Von Melissa, who insists that Wren moves out. Spencer has trouble Schreiben a paper for class because Melissa and their parents are mad at her, so Spencer submits one of Melissa's old papers as her own. Spencer is horrified when her paper is nominated for a national award.
Emily Fields
Emily Fields is portrayed Von Shay Mitchell. Emily is a competitive swimmer who comes from a conservative family. She befriends Maya St. Germain, the new resident of Alison's former house. Maya introduces Emily to marijuana, and the girls grow closer. A message from "A" reveals Emily to be curious about her sexuality, and hints that she had kissed Alison in the past. Emily's mother invites Maya to stay for a while, and she and Emily share a room, in which they also share a bed. Emily's boyfriend becomes possessive and almost forces her to have sex with him, but she is saved Von Toby. Emily breaks up with her boyfriend and kisses Maya in in a Foto booth at a party; someone steals the photograph, which she later finds in her textbook. Emily starts to befriend Toby, a former target Von Alison.
Alison DiLaurentis
Alison DiLaurentis is played Von Sasha Pieterse. Alison is the former "It Girl" of Rosewood and the leader of the clique. Ruling the group with an iron fist, the somewhat vicious Alison had gone missing during a slumber party; a Jahr later, her disappearance is still unsolved. When Aria, Hanna, Spencer, and Emily begin receiving threatening messages from "A" reminding them of their darkest secrets, they suspect that "A" is Alison, whose body is soon discovered buried in her former backyard.

Ella is the kind, caring stay-at-home mother and Byron is the adulterous history professor who cheated on his wife a Jahr Vor with his student, Meredith. Ella unknowingly befriends Meredith. Byron regrets the affair and Aria struggles with keeping the secret from her mother to protect her. The relationship between Byron and Ella is strained after Ella reads a letter from "A" revealing Byron's affair.
Ashley Marin
Ashley Marin, played Von Laura Leighton, Hanna's workaholic mother who is raising her daughter on her own after her husband left her. Abandoned Von Hanna's father, Ashley recognizes Hanna's wild behavior as a cry for attention. Warning her daughter that any indiscretion in their small town can humiliate them, Ashley avoids Hanna being charged for shoplifting Von sleeping with the arresting officer.
Melissa Hastings
Melissa is Spencer's older sister who is engaged to Wren. She is prettier and smarter than Spencer and tends to be her parents favorite. She sees Spencer Küssen Wren and insists that he moves out. She is played Von Torrey DeVitto.
Maya St. Germain
Bianca Lawson plays Maya, whose family has moved into Alison's old house. She and Emily bond over some of Alison's discarded belongings and Maya's marijuana, and Maya's presence awakens a slight same-sex attraction in Emily. The discovery of Alison's body buried under the gazebo on Maya's property brings the girls closer. They KISS at the party, but Emily starts to push Maya away when Emily reengages with Toby Cavanaugh.
Mona Vanderwaal
Janel Parrish portrays Mona Vanderwaal, a former social outcast who longed to be accepted into Alison's group. In the Jahr since Alison's disappearance, Mona has transformed herself into a beliebt social leader alongside Hanna.
Jenna Marshall
Known as Jenna Cavanaugh in the book series, Jenna is portrayed Von Tammin Sursok, the younger stepsister of Toby, Jenna is the girl who Lost her sight due to a prank played Von Alison, intended for Toby. Jenna is in psychotherapy. The girls suspect her to be the mysterious "A".
Toby Cavanaugh
Keegan Allen portrays Toby Cavanaugh, Jenna's stepbrother. Ali's prank was meant for him, but ended up hurting Jenna; he knows the girls were behind it, but took the blame when Ali threatened to reveal one of his secrets. He is attracted to Emily and they start hanging out.
Sean Ackard
Sean is Hanna's boyfriend who pledges his virginity. Hanna's anger and embarrassment at Sean's refusal to have sex makes Hanna take Sean's car for a joyride and ultimately crash it. Sean forgives Hanna and reveals that he is a member of RLW, Real Liebe Waits, which is a virginity club. He is played Von Chuck Hittinger.
Wren
Wren is portrayed Von Julian Morris. Wren was engaged to Melissa until he develops feelings for Spencer. When he was caught Küssen with Spencer Von Melissa, she calls off the engagement and kicks Wren out of their barn. He then apologizes to Spencer for making a mess with her and her sister and told her that he wishes that he met her first.
