I like the "Thumbs up" button thingy, though... it'd be great if it said "Fan of it" not thumbs up like Youtube..

I because it's useless, if you like something comment or is it just laziness and easier to hit a button.

Facepop strikes back again

I think commenting on comments to simply show that you like it is kind of pointless.
You can either say "I like your comment", or actually do it. I'd honestly prefer to do it.

I like wall posts and comments all the time, but I feel stupid typing "Hey, I like what you said there" or "agreed".

Well I like the new look. And I approve of the like button, which other sites used before Facebook ever did so I don't know why some people keep accusing FP of copying FB there.

Millions of other sites have brought in the 'like/thumbs up' model, so Fanpop has just hopped on the same Facebook-replication bandwagon. To me, Fanpop's old system encouraged people to actually communicate with each other with, ya know, words. People had motivation to add their own voice to a conversation, but bring in the 'like/thumbs up' system means that if people are on the fence about joining a conversation, they now have the dumbed-down, antisocial option of just clicking a button and not actually interacting with people. I really liked that Fanpop wasn't participating in that to as much of an extent as other sites. But I guess for a while now Fanpop has been changing to this more passing-through model of participation where people 'like/thumbs up/fan' things quickly so they can move on to the next thing and generate more hits on the website, rather than the more participatory nature of things before where you interacted with users and took the time to think about why you liked/hated something. Ages ago, when you posted an image, you would usually get multiple comments from multiple people. But the kind of people who participated like that don't dominate the site anymore. The site has become increasingly dominated by people who fly through, look at some photos of Justin Bieber and then fly through to the next website and look at some more photos of Justin Bieber. Those are the kinds of users who want websites to have like buttons and the Facebook structure, because it is easier for them to navigate the web if everything is similar. Instead of discouraging that kind of user, Fanpop has re-designed itself to fit that dominant Facebook model. It isn't surprising, but it is phenomenally disappointing when Fanpop was just so different and became popular because of that difference, but now it is just doing what every other social networking site is trying to do, which is replicate the success of Facebook at the expense of the people who actually use the site.
