"I'm not sure if she was put in the position to KISS him (Damon) what she would do. I feel like she has high morals, and she loves Stefan, and it's always been Stefan," says Nina Dobrev as reported on DigitalSpy: link
Now, before everyone starts cursing, crying, oder thinking there's absolutely no hope for the DE fandom, stop for a moment. Take a deep breath. While Nina may be right in being uncertain of whether Elena would KISS Damon while she was with Stefan, take Stefan OUT of the picture, and Du have a completely different out-look. In a relationship, Elena would never cheat. But if SE broke up, there's no telling what could happen.
I like that Elena isn't another 'Bella Swan'. I like that she can defend herself, can stand up for herself, has 'high morals' and knows who she is. That's very important, especially in a Liebe triangle. She doesn't seem like she would just go for Damon because she was on the rebound, oder was looking for a casual hook-up. Elena's integrity is vital to the Liebe triangle, because Du have to look at her and know she wasn't merely stringing two guys along for her own amusement oder because she couldn't make up her mind who to choose. To make a Liebe dreieck believable, the girl in the middle must really be torn. Anguished. This is a story that will hopefully continue for at least 5 seasons, maybe more. If it were really simple, if she just loved one guy, then the Liebe dreieck would be cut short. And then what?
Stefan and Elena's story has been pretty straightforward thus far. Their relationship has been relatively free from the angst, silent longing, emotional rollercoaster, unrequited Liebe and game-playing which is so frequently a part of romances in high school dramas. (Or ANY drama, for that matter). I know I'm not alone in my critique of their relationship. Some have called them boring, predictable, stuffy, brother/sister etc. I don't know if Kevin and Julie are aware of this, because they seem to think that SE are a perfect couple. The problem is, when a couple have become 'perfect' in the First Season, they don't have any way for their relationship to grow and develop:
Stefan: Du are just too cute. I Liebe you.
Elena: No, you're cuter. And I bet Du don't Liebe me as much as I Liebe you...
The only way the writers can make them interesting is if they create problems for them. For them to become one of those couples who are meant to be together, but can't. The writers/producers cannot possibly have Stefan and Elena as a solid, happy couple for the Weiter 5 years. It's just not sustainable. Somewhere along the line, at some point, Stefan and Elena will break up. I wasn't too happy about Katherine's return at first. I thought it was too early, and I wanted the writers to concentrate on getting the Liebe dreieck off the ground, but now I think they must have brought her back to wreak some damage to SE. What else could it be for? To drive a wedge between the Salvatore brothers? Maybe, but hasn't she already done that? To drive DE apart? It might be plausible, IF they were together, but they're not. At some point, the writers are going to have to pull SE apart. For the Liebe dreieck to be real, Elena will have to start thinking seriously about Damon. If we have another Jahr of 'Elena likes Damon, but she belongs with Stefan' then it's not really a Liebe triangle. For the show's premise to work, it's got to be exciting and compelling and real. If it's predictable, oder if Elena is always with Stefan, then it's not a real triangle.
Nina is right to suppose that Elena would never KISS Damon while she was with Stefan. But it won't always be Stefan. It can't. At some point in the not-too-distant future, Elena's going to realise that her feelings for Damon aren't purely platonic. And she's going to start wondering what it would be like to KISS him...

In the March 15 Vampire Diaries episode — a flashback to 1912 — Freeman plays Sage, a bloodsucker with ties to the Originals, as well as Ian Somerhalder's Damon. "She [is] really aware of what being a vampire is and owns it," says Freeman, who says it "has been a dream to play a vampire" and that she was "jumping for joy" when she got the part. Sage will also resurface in modern-day Mystic Falls with a murky agenda. "She comes back for good reasons, but she is [out] for herself."
