Day 2

The Tag started just like yesterday. The buzzer sounded for wake up. Skipper and Hans slid out of bed, ate their fisch mush, and went outside into the yard.

“Let’s teilt, split up, get a perimeter. And don’t get distracted.” Skipper ordered.

“Who put Du in charge?” Skipper just glared at him. “Alright, alright, fine. I’m going.” They went their separate ways.

Skipper took mental notes of the 30 foot high fence topped with thick coiled barbed wire and the four watchtowers that could be seen from the yard. Past those watchtowers, there were woods. He stood there a moment, wishing he could just go running into it. Running into freedom. To his team. He hated wondering what might be happening to them. Not knowing was eating him alive. “I wouldn’t if I were you.” Skipper turned to see a rather young looking inmate looking at him. “There have been others who have tried to escape this prison. Over thirty incidents in the past two years. No one has ever succeeded. There have been some that came close, but escape from Vestre is darn near impossible.”

    “Who are you?” Skipper asked.

“Around here I’m known as Shrimp. When I was 17 I got busted for armed robbery. It ended with 27 deaths. I never meant for it to happen. I was tried as an adult and have been here for three years now.”

“Why are Du telling me this?”

“I’m not like the other inmates. I don’t take pride in my crime. And Du strike me as someone who feels the same way about what he’s done. If Du enjoy having your head attached to your body, Du best not do what I think your thinking about doing.” He had a slight southern drawl to his voice for someone in Denmark, which struck Skipper as odd.

    “Where are Du from?”

“Georgia, over in the states. My family moved here when I was eight years old. What about you?”

“New York. I was taken here against my will.”

“I heard your crime is nineteen years old now. What’d Du do?”

    “It’s a long story.”

    “I’m not going anywhere.”

Skipper sighed. “Listen…I’d Liebe to stay and chat but I’m kind of busy at the moment.”

“So you’re still gonna try to break out?”

“There are some Friends of mine who need me. I’ll stop at nothing to find them.”

    “Good luck.” Skipper nodded.

Hans went to the other side of the yard. Wasn’t much different from what Skipper found except from his position he could see part of the front of the building off in the distance. He could see penguins coming and going. He turned to look at the prison. About three stories high with a few windows on this side. He began to walk inside.

Where is that imbecile going? Skipper thought watching Hans go inside. He followed him down a long hallway that had many cameras and guards waiting on the sides for any trouble makers. A janitor walked Von him—he was wearing a kappe and hung his head which covered his face—and bumped into Skipper’s shoulder. “Excuse me…” Skipper said. The janitor remained silent as he kept walking. Skipper eyed him suspiciously for a moment, then pressed on. He followed Hans back to the cell block.

“What are Du doing?” There wasn’t anybody else in the cell block at the moment as far as they could see.

“Sh!” Hans turned around and leaned in closer to Skipper. “I’m scoping out the inside. We’ll be spending most of our time in here right?” Hans whispered.

“Good point. I think one of us should go to the infirmary. We can get a better look around the prison.”

“Good idea, but the only way we’re getting to the infirmary is if we get hurt. We can’t get in a fight oder we’ll go to the hole. So…”

“Actually I’m counting on it. The Mehr we see of the prison the better.”

“Which one of us should go?”

“I think I should go. Like I said, Du lose a fight, you’re an easy target. I can handle myself. Hans,” He lowered his voice for a moment. “I can’t believe I’m saying this…I’m going to need to know I can trust you. I’m going to let Du win a fight against me. Not that your word means anything to me, I need to know Du won’t go overboard with this privilege.”

“I won’t. We need to work together to get out of here. As much as I hate your guts, I won’t do any permanent damage.”

“Works for me. Time and place?”

    “Lunch?”

    “Game on.”

At lunch, Hans and Skipper got ready to put on their acts. Hans picked up his water and began drinking. Skipper “bumped” into him and water spilled all over Hans. Hans turned around. “Hey! Watch where you’re going Du idiot!”

    “Make me why don’t you!”

Hans slammed the cup on the tabelle and made a schlagen, punsch at Skipper. Skipper blocked the schlagen, punsch and “punched” him in the stomach. He didn’t do it hard enough to make him double over. Hans punched Skipper hard in the jaw; their plan was to get Skipper hurt just enough to need a few stitches. It was kind of difficult though considering how tough Skipper was though. Skipper swung Hans into a table. Hans picked up a hard plastic tray and hit Skipper in the head with it. It worked. His forehead broke open and was bleeding.

By now guards were breaking through the crowd of inmates and were upon them. Manor gave the orders. “Alright! I warned Du two! Take him to the hole! After he’s done in the infirmary throw him in the hole too!”

Skipper was then taken to the infirmary as he’d planned. On the way he made mental notes of everything he saw. Once at the infirmary, he was sat down on a bett in the far corner. There were nurses everywhere, caring for sick oder injured inmates. He looked out the window. He could see the front of the prison. To him it looked like freedom. He turned back to the sea of nurses and patients. He immediately took notice of the nurse approaching him. His beak seemed to hit the floor.

She walked up making a silent ‘sh’ gesture. She walked up, set a few things on the bett and shut the curtain around them so they’d have some privacy.

    “Eve…but…how?” Skipper whispered.

“Sh…I don’t have much time to say much. I’ll explain Mehr later. Your team is safe. And don’t call me Eve around here. Call me Susan. What happened to your forehead?”

    “Long story. How are you?”

“I’m fine. Lemme stitch Du up. This may sting a little.”

Skipper cringed slightly at the sting of the antiseptic on the cut on his forehead. “It’s going to be fine Skipper. We have a plan.”

We? Skipper thought. Eve looked into his eyes; she could tell he wasn’t quite sure he believed what he was seeing. She slowly leaned vorwärts-, nach vorn and pressed her beak against his. Even though he was caught off guard, he kissed back. Eve only allowed it to last a moment, not wanting to get caught. Eve then stitched his forehead, both of them were silent. “Be careful Skipper.” Eve whispered. She pushed the curtain open and called for a guard to escort Skipper out. He and Eve managed to catch each other’s eyes before he left.

The ‘hole’ was actually a series of small rooms; a small window on the door, a cot to the side, leaving only a narrow walkway in the tiny room. Skipper was thrown into one and was told he’d be here for two days. He sat in the cot and thought: What happened? Yesterday Alastair told me he was using my team…did he lie? How did Eve get here? Not knowing the Antwort to these Fragen was eating him alive. “Skipper!” He heard the whisper through the drain on the floor.

It was Hans’s voice. He got down on the floor so he could hear and talk better. “Yeah?”

“Did Du find what Du were looking for?”

“Well…sort of…Remember Eve?”

“Yes but what does your girlfriend have to do with any of this?”

“She…wait what?”

“Oh don’t play dumb with me. I woke up before Du did. I heard Eve go on and on about how much she cares about Du and how ‘Alastair can’t do this’. And I heard Du mumble her name in your sleep.”

Skipper felt himself redden. “Well…she…oh shut up Hans. The point is she’s here.”

“Here?”

“Yeah, we can’t talk about it right now though. We need to wait until we cans speak Mehr privately.”

“Alright.” The two of them lay down in their cots. Skipper couldn’t stop thinking.

How did Eve get here? What is she planning? What did she mean Von ‘we’? Are my men here too? Where are they? She sagte they were safe…Does that mean Alastair won’t be bothering us anymore? When am I going to know the Antwort to these questions?
