Let's talk about "2D" and "CGI" Disney Princess Movies.

Well, I've noticed recently, that people have been talking about the Animation of the Disney Princess Filme recently, Mehr so the difference between 2D and CGI Disney Princess movies, as well as some other things.

Most seem to think 2D is better. Well, Mehr than most, almost all actually. I too Liebe the 2D Animation from the Disney Princess movies, it looks great, especially in some of the movies, however, I think people are starting to overrate the 2D movies, at least on fanpop.

Outside of fanpop, the matter is completely different. The CGI Filme are loved and praised Von many, especially young children. They have gegeben Disney the most success, and the reviews for their CGI (Disney Princess) movies, are mostly solid. So.. It sounds like the CGI Filme are overrated outside of Fanpop right? Well, yep, kind of at the least.

However, with fanpop, it's a different story. On here, a lot of people here grew up watching Filme like "Cinderella" "Beauty and the Beast" "The Little Mermaid" "Mulan" and others. So, we can put nostalgia up there as well, Wird angezeigt how most of us grew up as young kids watching 2D Disney Films, not the CGI ones. Well, nostalgia plays a part in why Du may like the 2D films better, whether you've noticed that oder not. You'll always have a soft spot for the Filme that have the Animation style of your favorite, oder the movie Du grew up watching over and over again.

Many people also consider 2D Filme to have Mehr "realistic" animation. Well, this really depends on which one you're talking about. There are some Disney Princesses, like Mulan, that actually look like real teenagers. Others? Just not quite as much. Now to CGI. Do these Filme have realistic character designs? Well, some of them don't exactly look like real people, and many characters have exaggerated features. Take Kristoff's huge nose for example. Well, in our minds, it's actually easier to relate to characters that are Mehr realistic looking. So, is that why people relate to Mulan so much Mehr than Elsa? Well, partly, that and the part that Mulan has a larger character development.

But, is character Design ALL that Du look for in a Disney Princess movie? Well, I sure hope not. There are things like plot, characters, and development that come to mind. I honestly don't think any of the Disney Princess Filme fully miss the mark when it comes to that, even Frozen, which I have ranted on about the characters before.

Next, overrating. Many people tend to dislike Frozen just because it is overrated. If it didn't get any attention, would people like it more? In my opinion, the answer is yes. It will have its haters, but there definitely wouldn't be as many hate rants as there were before. Many people tend to dislike Frozen for being overrated, and then praise The Princess and the Frog, because it didn't get as much attention. Many people think the hand-drawn films are better because they got less attention. But, when Du think about it, the hand-drawn films get tons of attention too. It's just that our minds tend to overlook it, because our Favoriten tend to be hand-drawn movies.

Overall, does the Animation REALLY matter most in a movie? Nope. It's like judging a book Von it's cover. Looking at a trailer and saying "This is CGI, why bother watching it?" is basically judging a book Von it's cover, just in a movie's case. It's okay to dislike a CGI movie, but reasons are better than just saying "CGI just can't compare to 2D." How is that proving your point at all? And how can people agree with Du for listing no point? Nostalgia, the look of the animation, the character designs.. Those are the first things that come to mind. But then, Du should think again. What about plot, what about character development? That's what's really important after all.

Anyways, what are your opinions on this? Do Du think that 2D is better than CGI, oder reversed? Why do Du think one is better?

fanlovver Okay, first, great article! I think someone should take this up, I am glad you did. I agree on what you said. I don't know weather I like CGI or 2D animation the most, I used to like 2D more, but after re-watching Tangled I am torn.

avatar_tla_fan ^ Yeah, I think that both are great styles of animation, and I get annoyed when people tell me that CGI is getting old and isn't good.

audreybrooke CGI annoys me, and it really distracts me from enjoying the movie most of the time. The only exception that I can think of is Tangled, but the animators were deliberately trying to be whimsical and 2D-ish with it.

avatar_tla_fan Yeah, they didn't want people to be extremely skeptical and critical of the movie, because it was their first CGI DP movie.

MalloMar Okay, first off, nice article. One thing, though. I didn't grow up with Hand-drawn (Or 2d as everyone calls it) or CGI as I wasn't allowed to watch movies but I still greatly prefer 2d. BUT I don't dislike CGI, either. The realistic thing, I'd say it depends on the animation style. Look at Aladdin's animation, and compare it to Cinderella. The characters definitely look different. As for CGI, I have seen fairly realistic characters, but not in Disney movies. Disney tends to use a cartoony style of CGI. I agree that we should look for more in a movie than the animation type. Anyway, I love CGI in certain things, like vidoe games and non-Disney movies (and even some Disney movies) But in general, I prefer the Hand-drawn ones. Sorry for the rant.... And once again, very good job!

iwasneverhere I like CGI to a certain extent. For example... the backgrounds for Tangled, Frozen, and especially for Brave... were jaw-dropping. I loved the backgrounds for Brave. But CGI fails at the people stage. Unless, it is done full bore-- showing even the minute pores in the skin--- as in James Cameron's Avatar--- people's skin looks like stretched plastic. For Disney, this happened less in Tangled, but started looking plastic in Brave, and the most plastic in Frozen. I'm not saying 2D is really FULLY better at all. I'm saying, that the characters look more and more unreal in 3D. I don't know why this is happening...but it's happening. And I don't blame the 3D animation itself, but I do think its limitations are beginning to show. Thanks for bring this topic up, and terrific article opener!!!

avatar_tla_fan Iwasneverhere, yeah, I think that CGI DOES have its limitations, although 2D does too. I prefer the character designs in 2D, although animation and character design is less of a problem as long as I like the characters and the plot. And thanks!

Digoenes I tend to prefer 2D animation because I like the fact that what I am seeing is the result of an artist actually drawing. The line movement, the colors, the background, all largely done by hand. It somehow feels more tactile. However, I'm fine with 3D because Pixar and Dreamworks have done amazing things with the medium. Disney has been a bit so-so in terms of 3D animation, their character design (with the exception of Wreck it Ralph) isn't as inspired as say, How to Train Your Dragon (which I think has infinitely better animation, especially the sequel). Pixar has also created a slew of gorgeous films with wonderful stories while Disney is doing the same thing with its quirky princess stories. I would like Disney to be at the forefront of animation but it looks like it's going to have some challengers, especially with smaller films like "The Book of Life," which has some absolutely stunning 3D animation. In short, it's not which is better, but which is being used better.

Sparklefairy375 Well, that's a great article. I compeletely agreed of the reason why do you like 2D (the nostalgia). Although I don't grow up with many DP films (except Cinderella). Well I think because the face structure of the characters, they're have their own face style, not really much similiar, unlike in the CGI ones (ex. Rapunzel and Anna's similiar faces). And also the background, yeah it was looking morr classic (I'm sure many DP fans loves classic ones),ex. SB's ones. For me both are good, although I said I prefer CGI more. But, one of the weakness of CGI films, as you said, the characters face are a little bit weird and exaggerated. So I would like to see 2d again, after I read your article. But, are Disney will do it? Because now it was CGI era, currently all the big animation studios produced CGI films a lot.

BelleRose829 I prefer 2D because I feel it's more timeless, while CGI gets out dated over time. I like very few movies with CGI and the ones I do like are almost like 2D or very traditionally done. It's just the sort of person I am. Plus that opinion is very underrated outside of fanpop. Great article as usual. I do really like some CGI movies and 2D movies that use a great deal of CGI, mainly Brave and Rise of the Gaurdians. I also watch anime so it's not the character unrealistic character style I hate so much as it is the stories, I always have legitimate reasons for disliking something, mostly if it doesn't pertain to my style. But as you know I hate anything to do with pop culture. Again I don't hate CGI in fact I love it, but you need to use to my *fluffs hair* high standards, like Avatar, Brave, Ratatouille and The incredibles. Lovely article.
