well,... the number of members varies throughout the Manga and anime. Right now, the only members active in Akatsuki are Madara (aka, Tobi) and Zetsu (yes, he is still alive), and the members of Hawk if Du want to count them since they "work" with Akatsuki.

Zetsu faked his death in order to use his Spore Technique. The "Zetsu" that got stabbed in the head was just a clone of him. Plus, even if it was the real him, the black half of him would still be alive.

Anyways, there are only 2 members of Akatsuki right now leaving 8 vacant spaces in Akatsuki.

The old members are as follows:
-Pein (dead- partnered with Konan)
-Konan (left Akatsuki- parntered with Pein)
-Sasori (dead- originally partnered with Orochimaru, then Deidara after Oro left)
-Deidara (dead- originally partnered with Sasori, then Tobi after Sasori's death)

-Kisame (dead- partnered with Itachi)
-Hidan (incapacitated- partnered with Kakuzu)
-Kakuzu (dead- partnered with Hidan)

theres.....itatch, kisame, tobi (madara), deidara, sasori, zetzu (i call him zuzu), konan, hidan, kakuzu, pain (aka nagato) then theres the 8 clones oder watever Du want to call them, but there all called pain, and the main "leader" Du always see, his real name was yahiko! also some have died already in the shippuden, itatch, sasori, deidara, hidan, kisame, and in the Manga pain and clones die, but konan leaves akatsi=uki! oh yeah! orochimaru is a former member of Akatsuki but he left once itatchi joined!
