Chapter Six

I froze in place, my herz thudding painfully in my chest.
“ Uhh.. Nice little wolfie. You’re ok.” I muttered, trying to scoot make inch Von inch.
“Shayda!” My mom screeched.
“ Mom!” I snapped, not taking my eyes away from the snarling wolf.
“Just calm down!” I replied calmly.
My eyes were locked with the wolf’s. It would snarl, then look away.. Almost as if it was…guilty?
My mother had always sagte I had a stubborn streak a half a mile wide. There was no way I was leaving.
“ It’s ok. It really is. You’re not in danger here.”
I stretched one hand out tentatively, ignoring my mom’s inhaled breath heard all the way from the house.
The wolf shrank back a little, uttering a rumbling growl.
“Hey, hey. You’re ok. Just relax buddy.” I inched my fingers closer, holding the back of my hand to its nose, just like I would a dog. It sniffed me slowly and then seemed to relax. Its lips dropped back to cover its teeth.
“ There ya go. That’s a boy.”
I frowned. “Or girl. What ever Du are.”
The wolf’s mouth opened and its tongue lolled out, and it gave a little pant.
I grinned and crossed my legs Indian style, settling on the ground.
“ Shayda-”
“Mom, its fine now. Look? See? Why don’t Du go make us some abendessen, abendmahl oder something.”
Mom frowned, lingering in the door way.
“ If it tries to eat me, I’ll scream really loud.”
She finally smiled and stepped away.
I sighed and looked back to my new wolf friend.
“She hovers all the time, wolfie.”
Wolfie stared up at me, its green eyes sparkling.
“She treats me like I’m still a little girl. I’m seventeen Du know.”
Wolfie dropped to his hunches, looking up at me patiently.
Before long, I was telling him everything. About how I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it here.. About how tough moving was for me.
How I didn’t think I was fitting in with anyone. How confused Rafe made me feel.
Rafe. His name had me stopping in my tracks. I glanced down at Wolfie. He had laid down and was resting his chin on his paws adorably.
“Sorry.. I didn’t mean to bore Du to death.”
He made a content little whimper and blinked up at me.
“Shayda!”
“Yeah mom?”
“ Look at it! It’s almost dark. Du need to come in before Du catch cold.”
I sighed, glancing down at my little wolfie.
“ Well, come back if you’re ever bored. I’ll be here.”
I stood up, refraining myself from trying to touch his silky fur. When I got inside, Mom was waiting. I prepared myself for a good chewing out.
“ Why don’t Du go ahead and set the table? I need to go upstairs.”
I looked at her suspiciously.
“Really?”
“Really.”
“Well, ok.”
I watched her run up the stairs skeptically. Something had to be going on.
Not two Sekunden later, a knock sounded on my door.
I yanked the door open.
“Hey Shayda.”
That deep voice stopped me in my tracks.
“Rafe?”
