Chapter Sixteen

    Glory climbed out of the car hesitantly. Just like she figured, as soon as she appeared, her mom came flying out of the house.
“ Glory!” Nicole threw her arms around Glory. “Oh honey! I was so worried about you!”
Glory squeezed her mom tight, glad to be back where everything seemed normal. But she took one look at the Montez’s and Lupe’s face, and she knew nothing would ever be normal again.
“ Honey, where have Du been?” It took Glory a moment to realize Nicole was talking to her. She had been mesmerized in Aden’s eyes.
“ Oh…Uh.” She decided a subject change was in order.
“ Mom, these are my friends. This is Anna, Gabe, Lupe and last of all, this is my boyfriend Aden.”
Nicole had been smiling until she heard the word boyfriend.
“Your what?” She arched her eyebrows and her lips thinned into a line.
“ My boyfriend. Mom, come on. We’ve been Friends for a while, but he just asked me out the other day.”
“ Right before Du disappeared?” Nicole sent a glare Aden’s way.
Glory glanced over toward Aden while her mom was distracted, hoping for a little help.
“ Hi Mrs. Anderson. My name is Aden Montez.” Aden stepped forward, looking utterly gorgeous, holding out a hand to Nicole.
Glory held her breath. This was stage one. As long as Aden could touch Nicole, they would have smooth sailing. But of course, Nicole choose this Tag to be difficult. She crossed her arms over her chest.
“ Have I met Du before, young man?” Nicole asked warily.
“ Yes ma’am. A while ago. I’m not sure if Du will remember oder not.”
“ I think I would remember you, Aden, was it?”
Aden nodded.
“ Yes, well I think I would remember meeting Du before. Du are a remarkable looking young man.” Nicole sounded skeptical.
“ I assure you, we have met before.”
“ Hmph.” Nicole grunted. “ Well come on inside Du guys.”
Glory darted a frantic look toward Anna. This wasn’t working out like they had planned.
“ Momma, these are my two best friends, Anna and Lupe.” Glory tried again once they were all in the house.
Nicole smiled at them. “ Its nice to meet Du girls.” She shook hands first with Lupe and then Glory sucked in an excited breath as her hand met Anna’s. A blank expression flashed across Nicole’s face for a moment, and then passed.
“ Du kids just make yourselves at home, and come anytime Du like. Im glad Glory has such good Friends like you. Oh! Im going to go make some cookies!” Nicole bustled off.
Glory choked back laughter as her mom sagte the last words.
“Cookies?” Glory murmured to Anna as she led the way to her room.
“ Well I figured Du would be hungry. Du didn’t eat breakfast.” Anna grinned at her.
Glory chuckled and flopped down on her bed.
“ Are Du guys really going to stay here with me?”
“ Well we need to run Home first, get some clothes and stuff. Lupe will be with Du all the time, but I will be in and out.” Anna explained and eased toward the door.
“ We’ll be right back, Glory.” Lupe reassured her, and with that, they both walked out the door. Glory peered out of her window as they all climbed into the car. They disappeared down the street. Then something was flying through the air and hit her window with a shattering crash. Glory screamed as she stumbled back. A cheetah crouched on her bedroom floor, sharp teeth bared and snarling.
Glory screamed again. Then suddenly the cheetah began shifting.
