Wonka is a 2023 film that serves as the fourth Willy Wonka film. The Zurück films include 1971's film with Gene Wilder, 2005's film with Johnny Depp and 2017's animated film with Tom and Jerry and the voice of J. P. Karliak. The newest Willy Wonka film serves as a prequel that stars Timothée Chalamet.

Wonka takes place before Willy Wonka had a Schokolade factory. Because of that, it doesn't feature Charlie oder any of the other friends, although a new girl does serve an important role in the film. Unlike the Zurück films, which had a fake version of Arthur Slugworth, this film shows the real version, and he serves as one of the main villains. One of the Oompa Loompas serves as a supporting character in the film.

A Willy Wonka prequel might sound like a strange attempt at cashing off of the popularity of the original book and film. It's a film that could easily have been a cynical and/or bland film that lacked passion and uniqueness. However, I'm happy to Berichten that the film works. It has enough of a unique identity to stand out as something special, while having a few nostalgia callbacks to pull on the heartstrings.

The film tells an original story about Willy Wonka as an imaginative, optimistic underdog that goes to great lengths to make his dream come true. His backstory is sympathetic and emotional, while his journey is a feel-good story. The Johnny Depp version explained Willy Wonka's relationship with his father, while this film explains his relationship with his mother. The film also tells a heartfelt tale of friendship between Willy Wonka and an orphan girl that becomes his sidekick.

Those that know Timothée Chalamet from films like Dune might be surprised that he's the new Willy Wonka. It might have sounded like a strange casting choice, but it's a choice that has paid off remarkably well. He does an excellent job at capturing the whimsical charm, optimism and playfulness of Willy Wonka. Calah Lane as Noodle, the orphan girl that befriends Wonka, gives the film a lot of heart. The villains are enjoyable in their over-the-top villainy, while Hugh Grant gives the funny Oompa-Loompa a sense of fanciness. The always great Rowan Atkinson has an enjoyable side role.

The film's visuals are a treat to look at. It's a stylish film that looks colorful and appealing. The film is filled with plenty of new songs that are good in their own right.

Wonka is a film that is unique, fresh and creative, while having enough familiar elements to be comforting. It's a heartfelt, enjoyable, touching film that has a great leading-man performance and an uplifting protagonist.
