I pictured Shiri appleby for Melanie while reading it, but i don't know if she has hutzpah to play her. ?

You know who would also be kind of interesting as melanie is Evan Rachel Wood. She doesn't really look like Melanie Stryder, but she could bring the kind of edge I would like to see in the role. And she a phenomenal actress-i feel like she could tackle the complexities of the character(s). I could see Rachel McAdams playing her too. I really like Cristina ricci as the seeker, but Famke johnson would be even better. And i see Robert redford as jeb. And I would love to see Timothy Olyphant somewhere in this movie...he just fits...

I think Sophia Bush is my ideal Melanie, too. Jensen Ackles is my Kyle, and Ian could be Ian Somerhalder. I think of Amanda Seyfried as Wanda, but she's a bit old for the role (like Sophia).

Do you guys ever think of the character when you pick up a name? Because Gemma ward is nearly 180 cm! And Wanda is supposed to be a "small angel"! Not to mention some other actors' age...

I can't beleive no one has said rachel mcadams (she could dye her hair darker). She's talented and gorgeous.
I could also see ashley green as mel, but she'd need to buff up just a tad.
I know everyone's saying that she'd make a good wanda/pet, but Amanda Seyfried would make a good mel too.
I don't get why everyone is so hot on Sophia Bush. I just couldn't see her in a movie like this.

Oh yeah, and i dig the idea of emmy rossum as mel too.

not sophia bush or natalie portman as mel. sorry guys. i think they're too famous and too girly, even though their both good and strong actresses in other shows and movies, i don't think they fit mel's description good enough.
and channing tatum is too strong and massive to play kyle i think, even though he's super hot. maybe that's the other problem. . .

I imagined a lot of them a bit older and less hot. Re helo_gclaro's list - if you look at Ian Somerhalders eyes, they are a very light colour - with the right contact lenses they could be the shocking blue of ian's eyes.
I see the seeker especially as a bit older and not at all hot - don't forget how annoying she is.

She's just how I picutured Mel and is a wonderful actress too :) In Anne Frank she did an amazing job at portraying the dichotomy of Anne's inherent vulnerability and extreme strength of character...perfect for Mel

I've noticed a couple of people mention Keira Knightley as Mel.
All the photos I've seen of her lately though, look like she's about to snap in half. I don't think she has the the right body to play Mel honestly.

Well Mels hair needs to be darker than her skin, like a light brown I am guessing.

It said in the book that she has got hair a few shades darker than her skin.
But I guess actors don't have to be the exact same as in the book!!

People keep saying Sean Faris, but I don't like him. I think Jensen Ackles would definitely be a good Jared. And Ian Somerhalder as Ian or Kyle. But Ian and Kyle are supposed to be nearly identical, with the exception of Kyle's crooked nose.

Here is my dream cast:

I think the biggest problem is going to be finding people that are the right age. Melanie's meant to be around 17 or 18 and Jared is 26.

Every time I read the Host (which is often), I have always pictured Kellan Lutz as Jared. The description always fitted. The blonde hair, athletic physic, attractive. And he's around the right age. I have read in a lot of articles that people want Kristen Stewart to play Melanie, which I disagree with. A) - she's the lead character in Twilight, the other Stephenie Meyer project (which everyone knows, I just realised I made it out like no one has a clue) and B) - she doesn't look the part.

Reading over other suggestions, I definitely think Sam Elliott should get Jeb. He just looks the part. One of my friends suggested as Jeb to be Muse Watson, who was in Prison Break and NCIS. I know him from NCIS, he plays Mike Franks, Gibbs' old boss.

There is an actress who I think could possibly play Melanie Stryder, and that is Brittany Snow. There's a picture of her here: link
She was in Prom Night. She kind of looks the part, but I don't know.

The problem is going to be getting Ian and Kyle, since they're meant to look very much the same. Not sure about those two. But yeah, those are my suggestions. Oh but I hope that if Kellan Lutz is cast (and I hope he is because I'm a massive fan ;]), just not Kyle coz I don't like Kyle and the personalities are way too different.

I do agree that the most difficult part will be finding people of the right age, but Melanie is not 17 and Jared is not 26 except for a few flashbacks in the book. During the majority of the novel, Melanie is 20-21 while Jared is 29-30.

I like Kellan Lutz as well, but I really don't think they will cast him in The Host since he is in the Twilight movies and Breaking Dawn will probably film at the same time.

I love Sam Elliot or Muse Watson for Jeb. They were the people I pictured during my reading. They could both do the "crazy like a fox" part... haha.

I'm not sure that Brittany Snow could pull off a 16-17 year old now. I prefer someone like Anna Sophia Robb who is a closer to that age.
