Sherlock has succeeded in the 2014 Emmy Awards, with both the main stars and the show itself receiving nominations.
The dramatic finale of the third series, Sherlock: His Last Vow has made the shortlist for Outstanding TV Movie. Benedict Cumberbatch\'s portrayal of the title role has been recognised in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie category and his co-star, Martin Freeman is included in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie shortlist for his role as Watson.
The nomination is Freeman\'s second. The actor is listed alongside Cumberbatch for Outstanding Lead Actor for his portrayal of Lester Nygaard in the TV adaptation of Fargo.
Joining them in the same category are two more Brits, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Idris Elba, who were both nominated for the Best Actor Oscar in February, for their performances in Dancing on the Edge and Luther, respectively. Mark Ruffalo and Billy Bob Thornton, Freeman\'s co-star, complete the group.
Fargo and Luther have also both been recognised in the miniseries category.
Downton Abbey, which has traditionally been appreciated at the Emmys but missed out on Bafta recognition in May, has done well again this year. Julian Fellowes\'s show is up for Outstanding Drama against Breaking Bad, Netflix drama House of Cards, Game of Thrones, Mad Men and True Detective.
Furthermore, Dame Maggie Smith, who plays the spiky Countess of Grantham, and Joanne Froggart, cast as Lady\'s Maid Anna, have both been nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama. Michelle Dockery, who plays Lady Mary, has been nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Drama.
British actresses Helena Bonham Carter and Minnie Driver have been nominated for Lead Actress in a TV Miniseries or Movie. Bonham Carter for her portrayal of Elizabeth Taylor in Burton and Taylor, and Driver for Return to Zero.
Life has imitated art for True Detective\'s leading rivals, Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, who have both been nominated for Outstanding Actor in a Drama series, alongside Jon Hamm, Kevin Spacey, Bryan Cranston and Jeff Daniels.
Despite Derek receiving a lukewarm response in the UK, Ricky Gervais has landed an Outstanding Actor in a Comedy nomination for his portrayal of the title character. He is listed alongside Louis CK and William H Macy, who plays Frank Gallagher in the American remake of Shameless.
The Emmy Awards will be announced on Monday, 25 August in Los Angeles.
