First Images from the set of Resident Evil: The Final Chapter have released online.
The last chapter in the saga of Resident Evil films is currently under production, and while we\'re waiting for the first clip of
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter to be released online, we have a new batch of set photos to dissect. Within these photos, we get a good look at the new cast accompanying Milla Jovovich in the film. And while most of these photos don\'t provide us with any new contextual information in regards to the plot of the film, some of these photos are of great intrigue. For instance, one image depicts Milla Jovovich as an elderly Alice.
That image could mean a variety of things, but in all likeliness, the image of an elderly Alice probably implies that she survives the war for humanity and is able to live a normal life after the events of \'Resident Evil\' take place. That\'s not to say Alice will survive the ordeal unscathed, but the image of an elderly Alice all but confirms a resolution to the conflict, eventually. But before any resolution is achieved, Alice is still going to have to fight long and hard to save the world.
Along with the new batch of set images from the film, we also confirmation of both Shawn Roberts and Iain Glen returning to their respective roles in the \'Resident Evil\' franchise. Those being that of Albert Wesker (Shawn Roberts) and Dr. Alexander Isaacs (Iain Glen). The return of Wesker and Isaacs to the world of Resident Evil are quite a mystery. However, the synopsis for the film provides us enough details to determine Wesker\'s role in the film, at least for the first act. The synopsis is as follows.
Picking up immediately after the events in Resident Evil: Retribution, humanity is on its last legs after Alice is betrayed by Wesker in Washington D.C. As the only survivor of what was meant to be humanity’s final stand against the undead hordes, Alice must return to where the nightmare began – Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for a final strike against the only remaining survivors of the apocalypse.
In a race against time Alice will join forces with old friends, and an unlikely ally, in an action packed battle with undead hordes and new mutant monsters. Between losing her superhuman abilities and Umbrella’s impending attack, this will be Alice’s most difficult adventure as she fights to save humanity, which is on the brink of oblivion.
We already know from the synopsis for the film that Albert Wesker betrays Alice when they are supposedly making their last stand in Washington, D.C., but we don\'t know where the story goes from there; in terms of Wesker\'s role in the destruction of Earth. The conclusion of Resident Evil: Retribution saw Alice teamed up with Jill Valentine, Leon Kennedy, and Albert Wesker in Washington D.C. And now that we know of Wesker\'s betrayal, we can also confirm the off-screen deaths of Jill Valentine, Ada Wong, and Leon Kennedy. The tag line indicating Alice as the only survivor of the betrayal, more than implies the deaths of Ada, Jill and Leon at the scene of the betrayal. But we still don\'t know why Alice is returning to Raccoon City after such a long absence, and apparently nothing left in the city, other than rubble; at least as far as we know. However, an event will result in Alice and company returning to Raccoon City, but we don\'t know why Alice is returning to the city or what part Albert Wesker and Dr. Isaacs will play in the final act of the Resident Evil saga.
Going back to the synopsis for the film. There is a small line in the synopsis which states how Alice will receive help from an unlikely ally, and after Albert Wesker has betrayed her, it\'s unlikely that he\'s the unlikely ally mentioned in the synopsis for the film. The only other option would be for Dr. Alexander Isaacs to be the unlikely ally assisting Alice. But how could that be, after his apparent death in
Resident Evil: Extinction? Unless the Dr. Isaacs we encountered in Resident Evil: Extinction was a clone himself, similar to the Alice clones he developed, while the original has been hiding out since the world collapsed. In that scenario, the situation would call for Dr. Isaacs to step out of the shadows to join forces with Alice in order to stop the decimation of humanity. Apart from those two tidbits of information, we don\'t have much else in terms of confirmed information on Resident Evil: The Final Chapter.
Along with the synopsis for the film, we do have confirmed cast additions alongside Milla Jovovich who\'s returning as Alice. As for returning cast, we already mentioned the return of Shawn Roberts and Iain Glen, but we also have Ali Larter returning as Claire Redfield. Apart from the returning cast, we also have new additions in the form of Ruby Rose as Abigail, Eoin Macken as Doc, William Levy as Christian, and Rola as Cobalt. We also know that most of the film will take place in the ruins of Raccoon City. The last time the team from Resident Evil visited the city was in
Resident Evil: Apocalypse, right before it was destroyed by a precision nuclear device. But as to why the final chapter in the Resident Evil franchise is returning to Raccoon City is up for debate. The more popular theory gaining weight online is that the Umbrella Corporation has been hiding underground in a companion facility, apart from the Hive since the events of Resident Evil (1999). And this separate facility has been keeping Umbrella afloat since the collapse of the civilized world.
Ruins of Raccoon City, Resident Evil: Final Chapter
While that theory seems possible and the return of Dr. Isaacs (Iain Glen) provides evidence to back it up, another underground Umbrella facility wouldn\'t be too far fetched to believe. Especially after so many covert facilities in the world have been established under a protective guise, another unknown facility wouldn\'t implausible. However, that is purely speculative.
What do you think? Why is the final chapter in the Resident Evil franchise returning to Raccoon City? Is there another underground facility running Umbrella? Or could Albert Wesker (Shawn Roberts) return to Raccoon City for more virus samples which can officially end the surviving members of humanity? And could the image of an elderly Alice mean that all will end on a positive note, or is the elderly Alice simply a digital recreation that has another purpose in the film? You decide. Have any thoughts, leave them in the comment section below.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter opens in theaters January 27, 2017. Produced by Jeremy Bolt, Paul W.S. Anderson, Robert Kulzer and Samuel Hadida. Martin Moszkowicz is the co-executive producer alongside Victor Hadida. Starring Milla Jovovich, Ali Larter, Shawn Roberts, Iain Glen, Rola, Ruby Rose, Eoin Macken, and William Levy.
