But would he even have that cut on his leg if Katniss wasn't there? He wouldn't need to team up with the Careers to protect her without her there :P

If Katniss wasn't with him he wouldn't have to protect anyone, and he is smart, strong and brave so he would definitely win.

I think he would have pushed him to win and get back to her. If she would have died in the arena he couldn't have. It would have been to much for him to handle

I think that, sooner or later, he would have wound up fighting the Careers though he wouldn't have allied with them initially. And he'd have gotten killed, or injured and died of the injury. His lack of hunting skills would also weaken him.
