It’s taken Marvel more than 40 years to bring the world of Luke Cage to life with the character’s first live-action, headlining TV series, and Netflix is fanning the flames of anticipation with a new key art reveal for the upcoming show as it heads to Comic-Con in San Diego.
TV Insider first posted the upcoming series’ key art on Monday morning, showin off a minimal look for the project. Joe Quesada, comic book artist and Marvel Entertainment’s chief creative officer, designed the image for the Netflix original series, which shows the iconic character outlined in yellow against a black backdrop.
“There’s always great pressure with superhero posters,” Quesada tells TV Insider. “You’ve got one shot to encapsulate a character with a pose that’s provocative and that you hope will someday be iconic.”
Between July 20-24, fans can pick up their own
poster from the Marvel booth at the San Diego Convention Center.
The new series, from showrunner and writer Cheo Hodari Coker, stars Mike Colter as the titular comic book figure. Mahershala Ali plays Cottonmouth, Alfre Woodard appears as Mariah Dillard, Simone Missick takes on the role of Misty Knight, while Rosario Dawson’s Claire Temple crosses over from Netflix’s
series. Sonia Braga, who recently fronted the Cannes favorite
will have a supporting role as Claire’s mother, Soledad.
“It’s very sophisticated. I mean, it’s got a ’90s hip-hop vibe, but it’s really forward-thinking. We have Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad doing the scoring for us,” Coker previously told EW of the upcoming series, which focuses on Cage, who first appeared on Netflix across season 1 of the streaming service’s
“We have a lot of different musical appearances, but at the same time, we’ve got the Marvel action. We’ve got drama. I would like this to be, I mean, I know this is heavy but,
of Marvel television, because we really deal with a lot of different issues.”
