Elena- She was a young woman who, in the span of 2 years maximum, lost both her parents, who she later found out weren't her biological parents, then she lost her biological mother, then her uncle who was actually her biological father sacrificed his life for hers, her aunt was turned into a vampire and then killed by Klaus.

Then Stefan left with Klaus to save Damon, she struggled with her constantly growing feelings for Damon and her guilt over having feelings for him when she also still loved Stefan. Throw in having to deal with Klaus finding out she was alive and wanting to use her to make more hybrids, then Rebekah causes Matt to drive them off the bridge and she ends up becoming a vampire, which she never really wanted.

Oh and what's that you say? Her brother, the last remaining family member she has, becomes a hunter and has urges to kill her! But that's okay because that aforementioned brother is sacrificed by her doppelganger to revive Silas!! So she turns off her humanity, does some stuff she ends up feeling horrible amounts of guilt for when she eventually turns her humanity back on, her brother ends up coming back for a night when the veil between the living and the dead is lifted - yay! Oh and what's this surprising twist? He gets permanently brought back, awesome right? WRONG! Because in order to bring him back permanently, Bonnie, who is one of her best friends, ends up dying! So she's gained her brother back but loses a best friend.

I could go on... but basically - fuck anyone that says Elena was just whiny and annoying. She lost so damn much and kept picking herself back up, kept putting her life on the line to try and save her loved ones... but some people want to insist she's the worst character ever just because she cried a lot and was torn between two guys.

I did find Nancy super annoying in s2 but I still like her.
And well... I will never like Sansa sorry
