my only problem with this explanation is it takes all the magic out of what happened. it seems so normal now that it's kind of disappointing.

i know right? i'm soooooooo excited for next season cuz they literally could do anything with it. though the only thing i'll be disappointed about will be if Peter comes back and he himself doesn't know who anyone is.

This makes sense... I think that Walter could have made the machine then... If we go back to that episode where a guy made some kind of thing so he could travel to the past and save his wife, I remember he kept traveling back but never could get it right, until Walter gave him the key to going back to the exact moment and changing events without hurting anyone... I don't remember the details but it was something like that. The man was stuck in a loop, going back and not being able to change things UNTIL Walter told him something that helped him (I don't remember what it was now).

Maybe, after seeing the damages that was done to both universes after crossing over, future Walter BUILDS the machine to get Peter's consciousness to go back in time and save the universe. That's why the machine only reacts to him... So he sends the machine back through time so that Peter and himself would find it and save their universe. So they do that, but in turn the other universe gets destroyed, and like that, we don't know how many times they traveled back to try and get it right, they might have been stuck on a loop just like that man in that time-travel episode... And FINALLY in the finale, by having Peter's future conscience travel back with him, he realizes what he has to do to save both universes, and he does it, but just like the link says by doing so he "served his purpose" and changed the events...

I don't know, I just made that up LOL but maybe... But just like Peter said in that episode "real is just a matter of perception" so, I'm sure next season the fringe team will know something's not right, and will work to rebuild what they have forgotten. At least I hope so.

i believe you're refering to the season 2 episode called White Tulip. Walter told the professor that he'd made a mistake in one of his equations, something to do with using the wrong power. he also told him he'd be making a huge mistake by going back to save his fiancee, that it would change him in ways he couldn't imagine.

i think what you said makes sense. i am also of the opinion that this wasn't the first time they travelled back in time to try to change the future. that this time Walter had an epiphany about what to do when the previous times he didn't.

i'm a bit nervous that when Peter is found, he won't have memories of any of the past three seasons.
