Honestly I Liebe pretty much all of the characters in smaragd City. The Zeigen does an amazing job at Schreiben deep and complex characters that pay perfect homage to the characters from which they were derived. But of all of them West has definitely earned her spot at number one for me.
For one thing, West reminds me of my all three of my all time Favorit characters wrapped in one. She's got Azula's cunning and her sort of confidence. She's got Bella's 'maturity' and what I feel is book Bella's type of insanity. And she has this oddly maternal side to her in regards to Tip that reminds me of Regina. Her touch of magic also reminds me of Regina. In being a combo of my three absolute favorites, West has to be added to my Liste of Favorit characters.
On oben, nach oben of this, West has her own complexities. She's a multi-layered character and I enjoyed seeing her develop. They could have just wrote her up as this cackling hündin as she sort of was in the 1939 flick. But they didn't. Instead we have this conflicted and somewhat broken woman. She's a witch and feels bad for betraying her kin, but all the same she was obliging with Frank for a while. She's also a bit of an addict (I'll get to this later). In this portrayal, West was neither good nor evil (as I interpreted it). While she absolutely gave Dorothy a hassle up until the very end she didn't seem to have an interest in war. She kind of just wanted to live her life, as I see it. And to add a little extra something, she's openly bisexual. I think that such is a great thing to add to a character like West.
With that said, I do feel as though she is a very sympathetic character. As mentioned above she feels responsible and a lot of guilt over the death of her kin. I found it to be particularly sad when she's begging Glinda for forgiveness. Later that night she ends up slitting her own wrists. I was so happy to see Tip get her going again. I enjoy a strong character that can be sympathetic in such a drastic way. Moreover I can sympathize in that she's an opiate addict. The fact that she uses mohn to calm herself before preforming any magic. This goes hand in hand with her complexity; she's a witch who seems to have a divergence towards and fear of magic. West has just been so beaten down and broken but keeps on going.
Which is something else I admire her for. This woman has been through some shit but she's still alive and kickin'. Kickin' arsch at that. West is both a strong and smart woman and I really Liebe this about her character. Despite her Liebe of her mohn tea, this woman has brain power and can still recite her spells perfectly.
But West isn't just this dismal and dreary character. She's probably (to my standard) the funnest character in the show. I think that she has some of the best quotes; "you can turn yourself into a tomate, tomaten for all I care", "did I mention we sleep in", and (my personal favorite) "you'll let your parents go unavenged so Du can piss standing up!?" I just Liebe her, she's a riot. And she owns a brothel, not only does she own it but she joins the fun herself. She's lowkey Oz's frat girl. I Liebe her dark humor.
All of this is why I truly hope we can get at least one Mehr season with her and all of the amazing characters Arnold & Friedman have created.
