She does have some independence, but not a whole lot. She's more submissive.

I don't think I understand why people say that Cindy is submissive. She couldn't just defy her stepmother and up and outta that place... she had nowhere to go is what I understand. And it's not like present day America where she could get government aid until she found a job and worked for an apartment. She was an orphan who had 2 choices: 1) defy her stepmother and live on the streets, or 2) put up with her, and have somewhere to go and food to eat. I don't think she's submissive; she just wasn't stupid.

I think she was totally submissive.I think so because she can't do what she want for example she wanted to go the ball but here stepmother and stepsisters didn't want it do she can't go.She should do house work and I think she really didn't want to do that. But I absolutely agree with heathesvan she wasn't stupid ! She just haven't a good choice live on the street or just get accustomed with this rule.

I agree with heathersvan and Swanpride. I know Disney movies aren't always the most historically accurate, but they based it on Charles Perrault's tale, which was historically accurate I suppose, and it would be a bit ridiculous if the heroine of the movie just obeyed the villain's every order if she could just walk away. Besides, it's pretty obvious that the movie is set in a patriarchal society.

I agree with heathersvan, Swanpride, and Silverrose1991. She was smart to stay where she was, and she did what she could. But she is usually obedient (the very definition of submissive) and there is nothing wrong with that.Though as a lot of you have said, she has her independent moments.

The thing is, it could also be considered ridiculous to have talking mice, so it isn't a stretch of the imagination to have Cinderella be able to get a job in a world where mice talk and fairy godmothers exist. I see why they didn't have Cinderella get a job, because the plot needed her to be dependent on her stepfamily, but still. From what we are shown in the film, we don't see that there was really much stopping her from going job-hunting, instead of waiting around for her dreams to just magically come true. And as for whether she's independent or submissive, like MalloMar, I agree that there isn't anything wrong with submissiveness, and that Cinderella is exactly that. Submissive.

^Mice and fairy godmother are very different things from a society or a kingdom. The story must have some realism to it: in Beauty and the Beast there is a curse that turned people into enchanted objects and a man into a beast, but there still are women who gossip behind Belle's back because it "is not right for a woman to read".

And the Grand Duke says himself that he doesn't believe that love at first sight happens in real life, only in fairy tales, which suggests the story is kind of set in a real world-esque kingdom, but it has magic.

Cinderella is EXACTLY what a 19 yr old girl should be. If she was independent she would be acting like and looking like Mulan a guy in drag trying to be a girl. Not a real girl. Submissive girls are worth loving, worth helping, worth respecting, worth protecting
Independent girls are annoying and none of the good qualities above.
