She does have some redeeming factors in the book. In the book she's a little more mature and certainly more noble.

I like how in the original story of little mermaid, the prince loves to see the little mermaid dance, though. they never really acknowledge that in the movie.

Well, it's kind of hard to decide for me. In the book, I like how she dies for the prince, even though she has a choice, she knows that the prince is happy, and she doesn't want to ruin it for him. It shows selflessness.

However, I do like Ariel's childish qualities in the movie. So, I wish she had the intelligence and selflessness that she has in the book, but also her childish and curious qualities that she has in the movie.

I have the complete collection of Hans Christian Andersen (which is ironic, seeing as I'm like 1/4 Danish) and I love the original story but... Disney!Ariel is so fun!

I've only read a bit of the original. I know what happens in it though.

I think Ariel has more flaws and is more relate-able to the audience. Sure, the one in the story has some good qualities, but I would rather like a character who is more realistic.

She wants more than just love in the original. She is fueled by the urge to gain a soul so that she can get into heaven. Much more at stake there.
