I don't see Cinderella's story has a bad lesson for viewers... I know many people make this argument, but I disagree. Cinderella had a positive outlook on life and tried to make her life more pleasant-- despite being a slave. Most slaves would probably complain, get depressed, get angry, or even become violent. Cinderella spent her entire life being enslaved yet she tried to make each day as pleasant as possible. And then when an opportunity arose for her to change her life, she spoke up for herself and tried to take advantage of the opportunity. Even knowing there was practically no chance she would be able to go to the ball, she still gathered up the courage to speak to her stepmother about attending the ball, she worked really hard in order to finish the tasks being given to her, and she even attempted at making herself a dress during this time. And then even after her family sabotaged her plans, when her fairy godmother came and helped her- she took complete advantage of the gifts she was given by her fairy godmother. She was polite and appreciative, but possibly most importantly: she was determined. She did not let opportunities just pass her by--- she took advantage of them. But one must still remember that she was a slave, so I believe she did REMARKABLY well considering her circumstances.
Thats just what I think. Im so sad that shes got so many votes. The reason I voted for Snow White was because of the song she sings "Someday My Prince Will Come" -- why does your Prince have to come to you? Why cant you go to them? She runs away at the first sight of a boy, so...
Well idk, I honestly couldnt really choose. I dont think Aurora's is that bad to be honest. Maybe now, but not really the time it was made because times were different back then. There wasn't as much crime as there is now.
And about her never giving up hope I've never found her as hopeful as most do. I know I stand alone about that, people tend to feel it was one of her main qualities compared to other Princesses. She had no hope concerning escaping her situation, it had never even occured to her. To me the fact that escaping wasn't even in her mind shows she had absolutely no hope of ever finding true happiness and had just accepted that this was all her life could be. And one of her lines in the movie is 'I can't believe, not anymore. There's nothing left to believe in' when her dress is ruined. As far as we know that's the first time in her life she ever tried to get anything for herself, and she gave up hope as soon as it didn't work out. This sounds kind of anti Cinderella, I do love her character, and to be fair, I am judging her outside the context of her time. In her day passivity was a common and valued quality, so it's not that I think they were wrong or bad for making her how she was.
I also agree with princesslullaby, they all teach good lessons too. Cinderella has lots of lovely qualities a person would be lucky to have. I personally think each of their good qualities makes up for any bad messages they send :)
But it just annoys me when people use the "she doesnt stand up for herself" argument. Umm, what good would that do? She'd be even more abused if she did that. And if she ran away, then where would she go? She didn't have family, friends, money.. she'd be sleeping homeless in the gutter. She'd most likely catch some sort of disease and die. I think that's a much worse lesson than never giving up hope, but meh thats just me :)
She clearly dislikes her stepfamily and doesn't enjoy doing all the chores. For example, when she tells her stepmother she's not going to the ball and Lady Tremaine says "Of course there will be other times..." Cinderella interrupts her and says "Yes, good night" in a snarky way. She doesn't put up with her circumstances because she wants to but because she has to. Back then, if she'd gotten kicked out of her own house, she would've died on the streets pretty soon after. Her best bet was to seize every opportunity to change her life (go to the ball and meet a man) but while she is living in her awful conditions, it's better to enjoy the fact that you're alive and healthy than mope around miserably and be suicidal.
Also, in response to what Mermaid-Tail said: there wasn't really much more to Cinderella's story in the movie that took place before she finds out about the ball... so while yes that might have been the only time she tried to take action and change her life- it was the basis of the whole movie.
The whole movie revolved around the Prince's ball and Cinderella being able to attend and eventually meeting her Prince. She seized every opportunity available... she did not just sit idly by and allow her life to be miserable. She confronted her Stepmother and insisted that she be allowed to attend the ball because as she pointed out to her Stepmother, the invitation was sent to her as well. She worked as hard as possible in order to be able to attend the ball. Once she realized she worked so hard and it did not even pay off, she got upset. But, she stopped crying and feeling sorry for herself the second another opportunity became available and took advantage of this opportunity (when the fairy Godmother came). And then when her Stepmother locks her in her room after realizing Cinderella was the woman the Prince was searching for-- Cinderella tried as hard as possible to get out of the room and disobeyed her Stepmother by escaping her room to confront the Grand Duke and reveal herself as the owner of the glass slipper.
If she hadn't stood up for herself... she would have remained a slave and would never have married the Prince. It was BECAUSE she stood up for herself that she got her "happily ever after."
I agree that every movie had good lessons and bad... but I just think that the bad lesson listed here for Cinderella doesn't actually apply. I don't agree that she did not stand up for herself and did nothing to better herself. But I know that there are many people who will disagree and think it's valid.
and of COURSE tiana learned at the end love was good. But throughout the story she was stressing that it wasn't as important.
Just like Jasmine accepted responsibility again, and Ariel got along with her father again.
Not keen on the moral message from Tiana, either.
