shanyuisboss I do think Belle is smart, I don't like it when people say belle reads fairytale books and say she's not smart. Yes, belle does read fairy tale books but she also reads other things. Good job:)

MaidofOrleans Yay! Glad to see a fellow Belle lover. :D I completely agree with everything you've said! It seems to me that Belle gets a lot of grief for supposedly only reading fairytales, but she doesn't! In the special edition of the movie she reads Romeo and Juliet to the Beast, which is Shakespeare - that's some high class literature right there. Also, even though she does read fairytales, there's a quote: “If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales.” Guess who said that? Yep, Albert Einstein. Arguably one of the most intelligent people in history.

auroraxaurelia I liked your article. Good points and I agree with you. People think she isn't smart because the only two books she describes happen to be fairy tales. She looked over the small town library like she read most if not all of the books in it. Hence the "Anything new today?" question she asked the book seller. She read anything she could get her hands on. She just preferred to read fairy tales, and who wouldn't. Every person who likes to read has a preferred genre. Belle's happens to be fantasy. I love to read. Each book I read teaches me at least one knew thing. Even fairy tales have some good information in them. They were made originally to be teaching tools and to keep children in line. Each fairy tale had a meaning and warning to it. I agree Belle is open minded and odd. If she wasn't open minded she probably wouldn't have give Beast a chance and looked deeper into the world around her. I think being opened minded and curious go hand in hand. I think she is odd not just because of her love of books (which for her time would be odd and something for people to would talk about) and her yearning for something more. She wasn't a typical girl who wanted the expected things of the time. She was different and wanted different things. That made her odd. dclairmont, I think Rapunzel is very smart. She only had three books to read but she read them through thoroughly and showed great intelligence by charting the stars. MaidofOrleans, I forgot she was reading Romeo and Juliet to Beast. Duh! AudreyFreak Aurora- they don't think she's unintelligent for that. they point out that reading fairy tales, something made for children no less, isn't what makes her smart. I think they can be good to read for kids, but her reading them doesn't make her smart any more than Rapunzel baking pies makes her the Iron Chef. =P Any smart, slow or average person could like them. I know that reading is typically favored among intelligent people, and I do think Belle is smart, just not for these reasons is all. I don't think she's so open minded. her being nice to the Beast is the same thing the other DPs would do (except Merida, who obviously would try to shoot him!). She's judgmental and condescending about the others just for not sharing her hobby. that makes them ignorant people who oppress poor Belle, despite the fact that they have no problem with her. she doesn't want to discuss anything but her own interests yet expects others to do that for her, and is upset when they don't. She's a normal person too, which is why everyone says she's so relatable. The town was just unused to seeing an attractive girl take such an interest in reading. 'Different' isn't the same as 'odd'. Our musical tastes might differ but that doesn't make you or me odd. If anything I'd say Pocahontas, Mulan and Merida would be the "odd" ones. look how they are in their communities, unlike the accepted Belle, whose dad is the real odd one. She reminds me of Bella Swan, a typical young girl who gets all caught up in a fantasy world (plus that she falls in love with someone not of her species). And like most of the DPs she has her share of unintelligent moments (the West Wing thing being the most obvious). Before someone says it, I'm not saying you can't like her or think those things. but I've seen these same arguments over and over again and I don't think they prove anything. Your hobbies don't necessarily make [i]you[/i] intelligent. That's the same as saying someone is dumb for having a certain hobby. For example, lit freaks are sometimes unintelligent people, and jocks are often smart people. I didn't want any of that to sound rude either. I'm just presenting my points a bit bluntly here.

auroraxaurelia @AudreyFreak, my comment wasn't directed to you and I am not trying to discredit your opinion. I just don't see things differently. Fairy tales were originally made to teach children lessons but that does not mean they were kid friendly. They were gruesome, horrific, and violent. Adults enjoyed them and they scared the children. They were ways for each culture to pass on folk tales and legends. They have been revised and changed over time and are by no means meant souly for children. But for the entertainment and education for future generations. Reading may not make a person smart on its own but I think it is one of the things that adds to her intelligence. I agree she is judgmental, it is a flaw of hers that I think adds to her character (sometimes not in a good way). When she does try to share her hobby no one listens or shows interest. So they call her odd and she dislikes them for their small town ideas. As far as Belle being odd, she isn't the most odd of the DP's but for her in her town she is odd. I agree it is because people aren't used to a girl reading. But that combined with her opinions, hopes, and dreams make her odd (obviously not by today's standards). It was not common for a girl to be so forward thinking or be allowed to read like she does. I agree she has her unintelligent moments or lacks in judgement. I don't understand, "lit freaks are sometimes unintelligent people"? I don't think your hobbies make you intelligent or dumb, maybe a little more predisposed toward one way or the other but they don't dictate your intelligence. I respect your opinion. My opinion wasn't meant to prove these things right as a fact. They are simply my opinions and beliefs about Belle. So I respectfully wish to agree to disagree.

BelleAnastasia I am usually very annoyed by people, who say she only reads fairytals. If these people watch the movie, they'll see that she reads Shakespeare to the Beast, and this is not a fairytale, so clearly she reads all sorts of books. Nice article btw. You make interesting points!
