^ Probably because there isn't a European Portuguese option here. I don't really know the difference between the two Portuguese languages, to be honest.

^ I think it's the same case as with British English and American English, or with Castilian Spanish and the Spanish spoken in the Americas. There are differences in the pronunciation, etc. I guess somebody who isn't familiar with either dialect, wouldn't be able to differentiate them.
