I know it's more respectful to call them "he" or "she", but sometimes I forget.

I'm a native Spanish speaker so I call them them. In English I call them them too... But if it's about only one animal I switch between it or she/he (in English)

In polish we don`t call an animal 'it', we call them 'he' or 'she'.

For the animal kingdom as a whole I use he and she, whichever seems more appropriate at the time if I don't know the species.
Except for my cat, who is a she and is referred to as such on most occasions. Except my cat's a bit of a devil (especially the two times she was pregnant) and so sometimes when she is in a mood I might fondly refer to her as the Evil It. But i don't think that quite counts, and I'm not sure why I even wrote this.

I always use 'He' or 'She' for animals, but if I don't know their gender, i would have to reluctantly call them 'It'. I doubt they'd like having their genders mistaken...
