The 39-year-old actress and humanitarian, who is the official co-host for the conference, was joined by her fiance Brad Pitt and Foreign Secretary William Hague.

“It is a myth that rape is an inevitable part of conflict. There’s nothing inevitable about it,” Angelina recently expressed to CNN. “It is a weapon of war aimed at civilians. It has nothing to do with sex, everything to do with power. We must send a message around the world that there is no disgrace in being a survivor of sexual violence — that the shame is on the aggressor.”

Angelina Jolie and William Hague urge action on sexual violence in war zones

Governments will be held to account over ending sexual violence in war zones, Angelina Jolie has said.

The Hollywood actress and UN special envoy said a new protocol represented the “beginning of the fight” against the practice.

She was speaking to the BBC alongside UK Foreign Secretary William Hague at the End Sexual Violence in Conflict conference in London.

Mr Hague said progress had been made on what was once a “taboo subject”.

Ms Jolie and Mr Hague are co-chairing the global summit, which brings together representatives from over 100 countries and aims to create “irreversible momentum against sexual violence in conflict”.

Ms Jolie said some government representatives from around the world would hear the accounts of sexual violence victims from their own countries during the conference.

She said she hoped they would not only be “forced to act, but that they will also deeply want to and be moved and be committed”.

The protocol would provide a “manual” for governments to end the crime, she said, saying they would be told: “You can’t say you don’t know and you can’t say you don’t know how to approach it because it’s been done for you by hundreds of experts, including survivors who have decided this is how to handle it in a very comprehensive way.”

Mr Hague said it was “critical” that the conference was followed by action.”This is a subject that the world did not want to talk about for a long time”, he said.

“We have moved a long way in the last two years in getting the world to talk about what was a taboo subject, and now we have to follow it with action”.

Jolie says leaders now have tools to deal with war rape

The Hollywood actress and UN special envoy, Angelina Jolie, has told the BBC that a London conference on sexual violence in conflict is helping ensure that governments have no excuse to avoid tackling the issue.

In an interview, alongside the British Foreign Secretary William Hague with whom she is co-hosting the meeting, Ms Jolie said a protocol drawn up for the conference meant that governments now had all the information they needed to take action.

The Hollywood couple – with Foreign Secretary William Hague standing between them – posed for the large press pack at the ExCeL exhibition centre in London’s Docklands.

The coming together of an “unlikely double act” – Angelina and Mr Hague – is an example of how foreign policy should be conducted in future, the Foreign Secretary said while attending the summit. The Maleficent actress, who is special envoy for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, was dressed in an entirely black outfit, having been in white for the first two days of the event.

Reminiscent of their matching outfits at this year’s Bafta awards, her tuxedo-style jacket and trousers was similar to Brad’s dark suit.

Brad, who starred alongside Angelina in Mr And Mrs Smith, was also wearing dark-rimmed glasses.

The combination of Angelina’s star power along with government could be “formidable”, Mr Hague said previously. He also said the film star was “a pleasure to work with”.

“She has the power to speak to the whole world, to raise awareness, change attitudes.

“Governments like the one I am a member of hold in their hands levers of decision making and action.

“And is in many respects a strong example of the future of foreign policy and how it should be conducted.

He said Angelina brought “vast expertise”, adding: “She is an inspiration.”

Jolie and Mr Hague are co-chairing the four-day global summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict (ESVC) – now in its third day – and have launched an international protocol which they hope will “really, truly end impunity”.

At an event this morning where the Hollywood star and Conservative politician both spoke, Pitt looked on from the front row.

Baroness Warsi, who was sitting in the row behind the Hollywood heartthrob, was heard joking with one woman before Pitt took his seat: “This is Team Hague.”
