what is up with Sam this season (9)?

In S8 he "saw a light at the end" and wanted to have a life but S9 Sam's saying he wanted to die and he's pissed at Dean for saving him.
What am I not remembering between that so drastically changed Sam's mind?

It's because every single time one of them has been saved when they were dying oder dead, there's been a price oder catch to it. They had an agreement to stop trying to save the other in those circumstances.
