Here's some stuff I remembered seeing:
Each Tuesday night when we tune into
, we know that we’re in for some major laughs. Turns out, we aren’t the only ones catching a case of the LOLs. According to the show’s 16-year-old star Hana Hayes, it’s a struggle to keep a straight face while filming the Fox sitcom (Tuesdays, 8:30 p.m. ET), which follows the antics of Rob Lowe’s actor-turned-lawyer character, Dean Sanderson, and his brother, Stewart (Fred Savage). Hayes plays the role of Stewart’s quirky daughter, Lizzie, on-screen—but off camera, spending time with her co-stars feels less like work and more like play.
“Being on set is like nine hours of recess every day,” Hayes told
when she stopped by our New York City headquarters last week. “Rob makes Fred laugh so hard sometimes that he starts sobbing during production, and we’ll have to stop filming while Fred is on the floor cracking up.” But Lowe isn’t the only one causing his co-stars to get the giggles on set. ”Fred makes us all laugh too,” said Hayes.
Even when the cameras aren’t rolling, the actors still manage to bond in hilarious ways. “We all wear the same under-eye specialty patches to the set in the morning,” said Hayes. “I don’t think that they really do anything, but we look very cool sipping our lattes with them on.” Hayes’s morning beverage of choice? “A vanilla latte,” she said. Scroll down for seven more things we learned about Hayes during our chat.
“I was trying on a pair of high heels in Bloomingdale\'s recently, and I ended up hitting my foot against a metal display case and fracturing my pinky toe,” said Hayes. “But sometimes you have to be a trooper for fashion, so I still bought the heels—and if I’m going to go down anywhere, I’m going to go down in my happiest place on Earth: the shoe department at Bloomingdale\'s.”
“I’ve loved Zac Efron ever since he played Troy Bolton in
,” said Hayes. “One day he Tweeted about The Grinder, and I asked Rob if he had seen the Tweet. He said, ‘Little Zacky? He’s basically lived at my house before!’ Then we started talking about whether or not he’s too old for me to date, but Rob said, ‘He’d have to get through me first.’ We’re like a very loving family, which is nice.”
“My favorite beauty look is a little bit of mascara, some foundation, a slight contour, and red lips,” said Hayes. “I use Too-Faced Better Than Sex Mascara, and I’ve adopted a great red Chanel lipstick from my grandma. The one thing that I’m really awful at is contouring, though. Whenever I try to do it myself, my mom tells me that I have orange streaks on my face. So when I do my own makeup, I don’t attempt that anymore.”
“I really want a hover board,” said Hayes. “It’s like the lazy person’s walking machine—all you have to do is lean forward. Also, everyone on set has a golf cart. So when I get my license, [my co-star] Connor [Kalopsis] and I are going to get one, too.”
, and the show’s cast does their table read right next door to where we do ours,” said Hayes. “Every time I sit down, I think about how I’m sitting in seats that they might have sat in. One day I ran into [
star] Ed O’Neill, and he told me that he thinks The Grinder is really funny. We had a little gush moment.”

“If you have an exciting day where you’re doing a lot of things, why not post four times a day?" asked Hayes. "If someone doesn’t like it, then they can unfollow me. Because if something is really cute, I’m going to post it." Her filter of choice? "I always use VSCO Cam C1 or the first black-and-white filter.”
7. She uses social media for more than just sharing selfies.
“I get direct messages from people who are struggling with being bullied all the time, and we end up having really long conversations where I talk them through everything,” said Hayes. “It’s really great to be able to have that kind of one-on-one connection with someone you don’t even know—and it’s only possible because of social media.”
