[‘The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe’ will be covered in the Specials Retrospective]
EPISODE ONE: Asylum of the Daleks Von Steven Moffat
‘Asylum of the Daleks’ is quite a dividing episode, I know people who loved the episode and I know people who despise it. What did I think? I liked it. There are a lot of things to like about ‘Asylum of the Daleks’ such as the acting, the directing and the score. Another thing that I like is that the Paradigm Daleks seem Mehr realistic, they didn’t look like plastic unlike in Series 5 – in ‘Asylum of the Daleks’ they actually look as though they are made out of metal. I agree with thefivewhofans on YouTube, when they sagte that the Paradigm Daleks should have been in the Parliament, the Time War Daleks in the Asylum and within intensive care, we find the classic series Daleks. I loved the surprise of seeing Jenna Coleman in the episode, well done to the production team for keeping that a secret.
But ‘Asylum of the Daleks’ is far from perfect, the Amy and Rory subplot took away from the episode, it was really unnecessary. Sure it was well acted Von Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill but there was no need for it except to add drama to the episode. Another thing Skaro was destroyed Von the Seventh Doctor in ‘Remembrance of the Daleks’ how is it in the episode. Having sagte that it is a time travel show, so I guess I can look past that detail as it could be Skaro before ‘Remembrance’
EPISODE TWO: Dinosaurier on a Spaceship Von Chris Chibnall
I’m not going to lie; I was really surprised Von this episode. When I heard the Titel was ‘Dinosaurs on a Spaceship’ I cringed Mehr than anything. Although I was looking vorwärts-, nach vorn to it, I had low expectations considering it had Dinosaurier and was only a one part episode. But once again, Chris Chibnall failed to disappoint. The episode had witty banter, great acting, fantastic sets and amazing computer generated effects (CGI). Matt Smith was fantastic as always, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill give strong performances. David Bradley was cold and sinister as Solomon; Mark Williams was hilarious as Rory’s father, Brian. And Riann Steele and Rupert Graves gave great performances as Queen Nefertiti and John Riddell respectively. Honestly one of the only gripes I have about the episode is the two robots voiced Von David Mitchell and Robert Webb; don’t get me wrong, the suit used for the robots are fantastic but they’re really annoying. If Du want to know how I feel about the fate of Solomon, I’ll tell you. I haven’t got a problem with it. Hear me out, Solomon had already confessed crimes of robbery, murder and motivations of assault – and that’s just what the Doctor knew about! Anyway ‘Dinosaurs on a Spaceship’ was a fantastic episode which is quite possibly Chris Chibnall’s best script for the Zeigen so far.
EPISODE THREE: A Town Called Mercy Von Toby Whithouse
I know I’m in the minority here but I will as go far as to say that ‘A Town Called Mercy’ is my favourite episode of Series Seven Part One. Like I sagte in one of my Zurück articles, I Liebe it when the Doctor is tested in ways he hasn’t been tested before and in this episode he is definitely tested. His pacifism was tested to limit, Du can see it in Matt Smith’s performance that the Doctor is trying to control his anger. I don’t blame him for being furious at Kahler-Jex; what Jex did to his own people was horrible, he never told the patients what he was going to do to them, he just experimented on them after selecting a subject. I Liebe the fact that the reason the Doctor is getting darker is because he’s missing the Ponds, I think that’s a testament to how he needs a companion just like what Donna sagte in ‘The Runaway Bride’. Matt Smith was phenomenal in this episode; he is definitely at his best when playing a darker side to the Doctor because this episode shows it. As for the other characters I don’t think Amy and Rory needed to be in the episode as they were barely in it. I really liked the character of Isaac; I think Ben Browder done a fantastic job at portraying the character, same goes for Adrian Scarborough as Kahler-Jex. The Design of the Gunslinger is fantastic; the production team need a round of applause because that is a great costume.
I honestly have one tiny issue with the episode which is that the Doctor’s moral difficulties seemed to disappear about half-way through the episode.
EPISODE FOUR: The Power of Three Von Chris Chibnall
One thing I can’t deny about ‘The Power of Three’ is that it’s unique. It really does have a fantastic premise – the slow invasion. It’s just the way the episode is handled that disappoints me because I think it may have worked if the episode had been an Stunde oder at least fifty Minuten long. But it enjoyable, I’d be lying if I sagte that I didn’t have fun watching the episode. Matt Smith was hilarious when he was bored of sitting around waiting for something to happen. Karen and Arthur put their all into the episode (it was the last one they shot after all). I loved that Chibnall brought Brian back because he was great in this episode too – I loved the scene where Brian confronted the Doctor on what happened to his Zurück companions, it seemed very real. The standout character for me in this episode is Kate Stewart, the daughter of Brigadier Alistair Gordan-Lethbridge Stewart. Jemma Redgrave’s performance although limited was fantastic and I can’t wait to see her back in the 50th anniversary. My favourite scene in the episode was when the Doctor and Amy were sitting Von the River Thames talking about the future, Chris Chibnall wrote a wonderful speech in that scene.
EPISODE FIVE: The Engel Take Manhattan Von Steven Moffat
Back when this episode originally aired in September 2012, I loved it; I refused to agree with the people who were disappointed Von the episode. But previously when I watched ‘The Engel Take Manhattan’ I realized all the plot-holes within the episode, such the Weeping Angel – Jäger der Finsternis Statue of Liberty which can Bewegen across New York without anyone noticing. Even though it’s a fact that at all times someone is looking at the Statue of Liberty another thing, its hollow! How is it a Weeping Angel? Anyway…I digress. Other than the many plot holes within the episode, I really enjoyed it. The direction Von Nick Hurran was brilliant, he’s easily becoming one of my favourite directors for Who, right up there with Graeme Harper. And Steven Moffat’s script is quite good especially the rooftop seen between Amy and Rory. All the performances were fantastic in this episode, the stand-outs being Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill as they give it their all just like in ‘The Girl Who Waited’ and ‘The Power of Three’ they were brilliant as Amy and Rory so I was really sad to see them go because I’d got so used to seeing them onboard the TARDIS. Matt Smith and Alex Kingston also give great performances as their respective characters. I’m sad to end this retrospective on ‘The Engel Take Manhattan’ on a bad note but I was really disappointed Von the Weeping Angels, they have been used too much – they’ve Lost they’re fear factor in my opinion.
So I think that the first half of Series Seven was an enjoyable ride, sure it wasn’t perfect but it was definitely an enjoyable series of episodes. Below is my line-up for my order of preference when it comes to the five episodes.
