Hello everyone! I'm Veronica (a.k.a. ApplesauceDoctr :D), and hey, it's been a little while since I've written an article. It feels good to get back into the spirit of writing. :D
So, what have I today? As Du can see, I'll be analyzing the song "Reflection" from Disney's Mulan. I made a lyric video for it about a week Vor and realized just how deep the song is! However, in this analysis, I'll also be taking a look at the extended version of the song. It shows a different side of Mulan that...well, you'll see soon enough.

Alright then! Let's take a listen to Reflection!

Movie Version

Look at me
I will never pass for a perfect bride
oder a perfect daughter
Can it be
I'm not meant to play this part?

From this, we can see that Mulan knows that she can't be what society expects her to be - that perfect porzellan doll. It's just not going to happen, and as a result, she Fragen herself. If she's not that perfect bride oder daughter, then what is she? Who is she supposed to be?

Now I see
That if I were truly to be myself
I would break my family's heart

This excerpt here makes me think of Elsa. And Hercules. All of these characters want to just be themselves and fit in, but it's not that easy. For Mulan, she wants to be herself, but not if it means disappointing her family. She truly loves and respects them and is willing to try to be what society expects of her in order to maintain a good family image. As we've discussed, though, she can't do this, thus bringing us to the chorus:

Who is that girl I see
Staring straight back at me?
Why is my reflection
Someone I don't know?

For some reason, I never really understood what Mulan meant Von this, and here I am right now feeling like a complete dunce. xD
Whenever Mulan sees her reflection, she sees what she's trying to be - the "perfect porzellan doll". Du know this Von now. But she knows that's not who she is. She wants to be her true self while at the same time making her family proud. Of course, she feels that she can't be herself without giving the Fa family a bad name.

Somehow I cannot hide
Who I am, though I've tried
When will my reflection show
Who I am
Inside?

(That last line is repeated, Von the way. ;D)
This basically re-establishes what she's already been saying. She hides her true self to try and fit society's expectations, yada yada. She awaits the day, if indeed there is a day, when she can be herself and not worry about dishonoring the family.

I'll bet (not really) you're thinking, "Wow, that's it? Short song." Indeed. It's a gorgeous song, but rather short. We'll now take a look at the extended version of the song. Why was the song trimmed? Let's find out!

Extended Version

Who is that perfect bride?
It's not me, though I've tried
When will my reflection show
Who I am
Inside?

The looking-into-the-mirrors bit should look familiar, as does this excerpt entirely. The only real way this contrasts with the Zurück excerpt I showed is that instead of her admitting to hiding herself, here, it's Mehr directly related to what just happened in the movie *cough cough Matchmaker cough*.
The Weiter excerpt is where the contrast comes in.

How I pray
That a time will come, I can free myself
From their expectations

Du know how the movie version mainly focuses on her wanting to please her family? I mean, yeah, she does want to be accepted as herself, but only if she can do so in an "honorable" way.
That gets thrown off a bit here. This suggests that she wants to be devoid from society's expectations altogether in order to live the life she wants. Let's continue on to see where I'm going with this.

On that day
I'll discover someway to be myself
And to make my family proud

Wait, haven't we gone over this already? Yep, we sure have! No need to talk this over again. It's the next stanza we want to take a look at.

They want a docile lamb
No one knows who I am
Must there be a secret me
I'm forced to hide?

Alright, let's see. She's saying that society is basically like this: We don't know who Du are, and frankly, we don't care. But we expect Du to be perfect. Got that? For someone they hardly know, society's putting a huge weight on Mulan's shoulders, and she's not happy about this. From that last line, she doesn't seem too satisfied with being "forced to hide" herself.
This is the part that makes this extended version of the song seem questionable in respect to what we actually saw in the movie. It makes Mulan seem a bit Mehr selfish. Sure, she brings up wanting to make her family proud, but the extended song primarily focuses on how she feels with these expectations. She's had it. She just wants to come right out and be herself without the tension of fitting into the role of the "docile lamb".

Must I pretend that I'm
Someone else for all time?
When will my reflection show
Who I am
Inside?

This excerpt makes my point much Mehr clear. What makes the extended version and movie version similar is the fact that Mulan obviously wants to be herself. However, in the movie version, she seems mostly disappointed that her efforts to fit in don't work, and she hopes that she'll be able to make her family proud someday. Here, though, Mulan seems bitter about the fact that society has set these expectations on her. She's sick and tired of pretending to be someone she's not.

So, let's quickly compare and contrast the two. :D

Both Versions:
- Mulan wants to be herself
- Mulan wants to make her family proud

Extended Version:
- Emphasis on wanting personal freedom from society's wishes
- bitter about these aforementioned wishes
- bitter about hiding herself

Final Cut:
- Mostly just emphasis on her desire to be herself; no detectable bitterness

And there Du have it! I hope Du enjoyed Lesen this, as I had a ton of fun Schreiben it. :) Du may want to check out my link song analysis of "If Du Can Dream" from a while back.
I'll bet that Du either a) are going to listen to the extended song right now oder b) already have, haha. :D
Well, that about wraps things up! Thanks so much for reading! Adios!

At long last, the long-awaited Favoriten Liste I always mentioned but was too meticulous about Schreiben and incredibly distracted from to actually finish! So sorry it took so long. I talk about things I dislike about some of the princesses, but keep in mind that I still Liebe them all.

13. Belle:
Previous Position: 12

I respect Belle Mehr now and even like her personality Mehr after coming here. I just don’t care for her much oder really relate to her, aside from being a daydreamer and wanting adventure when I was younger. I don't think her personality is that inspiring oder original, which would be...

Lately, there has been some discussion on here about princesses and their personalities- specifically whether certain princesses have personalities oder whether they have sufficiently rounded personalities. I thought it would be a good idea to actually look at the personalities and the different dimensions to them to get a clearer picture of just how well-developed the princesses are as characters. This is not an Artikel about whether the princess is introverted oder extroverted oder personality type (I’ll leave that to LightningRed,) but the personality traits of the princesses. I will be looking...

I'm on a heroine kick, the female, not the drug. After doing that Artikel about Jane and Kida, I decided to make my own official line-up of Disney Heriones and rank them while I'm at it. So this is sort of a Liste and sort of a plain article. Anyway, I kinda set afew rules for myself.
1.She has to be human, but even then the only big losses are Lady and Nala.
2.She can be any age.
3.She has to have some similarities to at least one of the official princesses.
4.Two can be from the same film.So let's get started.

10.Eilonwy
Counterpart: Aurora-long blonde hair, actually a princess
I watched her...

I've already written Artikel on my Favorit princesses and action scenes, and now the countdow is about the "I want" songs. That's one of my Favorit moments in all DP movies. jasmin doesn't have any solo song, so I didn't include her in the countdown.

Please notice I considered the scenes as a whole, not only the song.

9. Snow White - "Someday my prince will come"
This song is short, and it doesn't help that it's showed in the middle in the movie - It doesn't add nothing about Snow White's personality. It also doesn't help that she sang it sitting on a chair, that forbidded the animation...

First of all, thanks to all of you, who voted in the picks! Here's the results for Prettiest Disney Princess Eyes as of May 2011!

10. MULAN
Overall people thought that her eyes are not big enough, and not as interesting as the eyes of the other princesses (whatever this means lol) Somehow the shape and the color are not vivid enough to make a lasting impression.

Darkshine said: "I think Mulan's eyes are very pretty"
KataraLover said: "They're beautiful!"

Instructions to Lesen the list, from AllegroGiocoso's article.

So basically here's how the process worked. I asked people that voted to rank their Favorit Disney Princes, and they Kommentiert with their ranks (a total of twenty-five users took part). Like with the team articles, the ranks here are an average of the ranks of everyone that commented. A difference...

5.Atlantica
Fictional place under water whose ruler is king Triton. This place is sort of palace-city. It has walls around it, but it doesn't have classical roof, and inner walls and that's what makes it odd and doesn't feel like home.

Other than the fact we couldn't breathe in such place the turn offs were also the look of an abandoned place, kinda ruined, cold, with only few rooms, furniture and details. It surrounding is also quite depressing. Nearby is ship graveyard and nothing else. No other houses, public places for mermen and mermaids, just rocks and seaweeds.
 Room of Triton's daughters
Room of...

I have been Lesen around this site: Picks, Articles, Etc...and it kinda upsets me that some people get angry at other people because they like a character they dont like.
Well each Disney Princess honestly brings something different into their story i guess thats why everyone seems to have different opinions on whos their favorite.

Snow White
Stands For: Pure Innocence
Snow White was the first glimpse we really got of the other princesses...who was the one that convinced us to like the others? She is in a since to nice for her own good, if Du know what I mean. She has a childlike way of looking...
