The mother of Jim Carrey’s late Irish ex-girlfriend, Cathríona White, has spoken out for the first time about the abuse and threats she has faced since her daughter’s suicide.

Brigid Sweetman, 55, told People magazine of her devastation on reading recent reports criticizing her relationship with White, 30, and alleging that she called her a “failure” by email just days before her suicide.

She also spoke of the fear she currently experiences in her own home in England which has been targeted by vandals pinning threatening notes to her door and painting “Die bitch” on her wall.

Cathríona White, from Cappawhite, Co. Tipperary, was found dead in her Los Angeles home on September 28, just days after a second break-up from the actor. She had been dating Carrey on and off since 2012. Although the official cause of death has yet to be determined, prescription pill bottles prescribed to Carrey’s aliases and several suicide notes were found near her body.

Sweetman has said that the negative press she has received following White’s death has made grieving for her daughter "one hundred times worse."

"There\'s a story that has been published saying that I sent Cathriona an email on her birthday nine days before she died, calling her a failure," she told People.

"I don\'t know who would say such lies, but this is something that never, ever happened. I am devastated people would say this."

She also spoke of the attacks on her home since said reports were published, stating that she felt unsafe living there.

“I feel I have to speak out now because I am in fear in my own house,” she said.

“Basically, the way it is here now, I am scared to go out of the door. I would love to move out of this house but I can\'t afford it."

Despite admitting that she and her daughter had argued and were not on the best of terms, she claimed that she would never call anybody a failure and loved her daughter in spite of their differences.

"Yes, we had had an argument. But what family doesn\'t argue at some time?

"It was over nothing and it would have been resolved. It\'s just hard when your daughter is on the other side of the Atlantic, you can\'t put your arms around her," she added.

"I absolutely adored Cathriona, like I adore all my three children. They are my life and I\'m so proud of all of them.

“From the moment she was born, I cherished her. Calling her a failure is never something I would ever have done. It\'s an awful thing to say to anyone, let alone your own child."

White was reportedly undocumented and had been living and working in LA as a makeup artist for a number of years. It is also alleged that she was a practicing Scientologist. Although it is said her family knew nothing of this, writer Tony Ortega said soon after her death: “I was contacted by a couple of Scientologists who go under the radar and keep me up to date on what is going on inside.

“They called me and told me Cathriona White was a Scientologist. They were absolutely shocked by her death. They told me they knew Cathriona very well.”

The young makeup artist first met Carrey, 53, on a film set in late 2012 and they dated for several months before breaking up in March 2013.

In May of this year, however, the couple reconnected while White was seeking a divorce from another man and they were seen together around New York before a second split in September.

Carrey attended White’s funeral in Tipperary where Sweetman met him for the first time calling him “a very nice man.”

"She was a truly kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil, to whom loving and being loved was all that sparkled," he stated on hearing of her death.
