Prepare to see Alexandra Roach as you\'ve never seen her before.
– \'Black Museum\', which tells three interconnected tales of terror.
Not only does the Welsh star nail an American accent for her new role, but the part required her to play out a wild, typically
scenario that we\'d be loathe to spoil here.
"I\'ve been a fan of the show since it first aired on Channel 4," Roach tells Digital Spy.
of my friends obsess over and are fans of. I think it just sort of speaks to the imagination of a certain generation,
"So, I got sent the script and I just rushed home to read it, and I really loved the pace of the episode. I was sort of, like, breathless when I was reading it. I was very vocal in reading it – you know, I was like, \'What?! – and had quite a visceral reaction to it, and that
happens to me when I read scripts, so I think that\'s a good sign."
Roach, of course, had already dipped her toe into the world of spine-chilling anthologies with a guest spot on BBC Two\'s
earlier this year, playing a young woman apparently seeking answers to a cryptic crossword.
, because it was just the three of us [Roach, Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton] in that small room for a week. And we only had a week to do it.
"But with this, it felt more like a film. Each episode of
has got a new director, so they come in with a new vision and a new energy, and they don\'t use the same crew members – it changes up every episode.
"So when you start it, it does feel like everybody\'s first day, which is great. And most people on that crew were young, and fans of the show. I think we all felt a bit like competition winners being there!"
Having done something totally different with
, Roach will next be back on familiar ground, reprising her role as DS Joy Freers in the third series of Channel 4\'s BAFTA-nominated police drama
"The new series is all about gang culture in Manchester and the Far Right, and the influences that they have – it feels very current and very now," she says.
, it\'s just straight into this new storyline. I think Channel 4 and [writer / creator] Paul Abbott can see it running for years and years and years. But we\'ll see about the future."
, a series not just fronted by female leads – Roach stars alongside Joanna Scanlan and Elaine Cassidy – but also one that predominantly hires women directors.
"It feels quite thrilling actually to be part of it, and then you step off and you do another show and then you\'re just surrounded by men again. It\'s not equal yet. But hopefully now we\'ve got shows like
, and more female directors coming through the ranks, we will get to that stage. At some point. Hopefully during my lifetime!"
season 4 will launch on Netflix on Friday, December 29.
