12 Fascinating Revelations We Never Knew About Adele and Her New Album, 25
In case you went into hibernation over the past week and somehow missed it, Adele is back—and the world is freaking out about it, to put it mildly. Her first album in four years,
, comes out November 20 and its first single, "Hello," is already smashing records and dominating earbuds (it racked up close to a one million listens
at one point). And now, Adele is speaking out for the first time in over three years to
, weighing in on everything from her favorite TV shows to the inspiration behind her newest work. Here are the 12 most fascinating revelations we never knew about Adele.
She originally wanted to be a heart surgeon. After the death of her grandfather when she was 10, Adele told
that she decided she "wanted to fix people\'s hearts." She remained serious about this career choice, signing up for biology classes at Balham\'s Chestnut Grove School. But her heart surgeon dreams were derailed after she discovered "fun and boys." "I gave up on it. My heart wasn\'t in it anymore," she said.
And she credits Amy Winehouse with getting her into music. "If it wasn\'t for Amy [Winehouse] and
, 100 percent I wouldn\'t have picked up a guitar, I wouldn\'t have written "Daydreamer" or "Hometown" and I wrote "Someone Like You" on the guitar too. Contrary to reports, me and Amy didn\'t really know each other, we weren\'t friends or anything like that. I went to Brit School and she went for a little while. But a million percent if I hadn\'t heard
this wouldn\'t have happened. I adored her."
She starts every album by purchasing a brand new notebook from the local store. "I do it every album. I buy a new pad, sniff it—because smell is important—and then I get a big, fat sharpie and write my age on the front page. 25 has five exclamation marks after it because I was like, \'How the f—k did that happen?!\' 21 to 25," Adele said.
is about "trying to clear out the past." "Becoming a parent and moving past my mid-twenties, I simply don\'t have the capacity to worry about as many things that I used to really enjoy worrying about. I used to f—king love the drama of all of it, but now I\'m a mum I only have so much head space. I\'ve got to clear a lot of stuff the f—k out, which is really therapeutic, because I can really hold a grudge. Life is so much easier when you don\'t hoard your past."
again. I definitely wasn\'t going to write a heartbreak record because I\'m not heartbroken, but I probably won\'t be able to better the one I did, so what\'s the point? Bit cliché, isn\'t it?"
\'s first single, "Hello" is about "hurting someone\'s feelings." "The song is about hurting someone\'s feelings, but it\'s also about trying to stay in touch with myself, which sometimes can be a little bit hard to do.... So "Hello" is about wanting to be at home and wanting to reach out to everyone I\'ve ever hurt—including myself—and apologize for it."
. "That\'s over and done with, thank f—k. That\'s been over and done with for f—king years. No, it\'s not about anyone specifically."
\'s tracks. Hearing Swift\'s "Trouble" on the radio led her to songwriter Max Martin, who worked with her on "Send My Love to Your New Lover."
Motherhood is much more difficult than she ever imagined. "It\'s f—king hard. I thought it would be easy. Everyone f—king does it, how hard can it be? I had no idea. It is hard but it\'s phenomenal. It\'s the greatest thing I ever did. He makes me be a dickhead, and he makes me feel young and there\'s nothing more grounding than a kid kicking off and refusing to do what you\'re asking of them. It used to be that my own world revolved around me, but now it has to revolve around him."
She sobbed when she recently met Stevie Nicks. "I was sobbing all over her, oh my god. I don\'t really like crying in front of famous people because it\'s awkward and it can make them feel really uncomfortable. But I couldn\'t contain myself."
Her TV obsessions might surprise you. Her favorites include
Her plans for what\'s next include another album—and seeing Britney Spears in Vegas. "I\'d like to tour properly. I\'d like to see Britney in Vegas. Dunno about more kids...I\'d like to make another record. I\'d like to be able to stand the test of time and the speed that the world is moving. I\'d like to make records forever with the time I\'ve been given for this one. If I can do that I\'ll be really f—king happy."
