The visitor pushed past without hesitation.
She had yet to get a chance to change. The uncharacteristically regal kleid bellowed pale cloth over freckled arms, tightened her hips in an amber corset, draped Gold over legs meant for pants and running. Only the wild red curls fit the intruder, tumbling freely over her shoulders after a night in tight pins and clips. Even the royal golden wreath was askew on the waves of red locks. The fury in her glimmering Gold eyes was even Mehr own of place than the dress.
"Our Queen sister accepted your challenge," the girl growled through a clenched jaw. Her stare was pinned accusingly at the king, rather than her brother. "Tomorrow afternoon. She'll have her champion fight against your freedom. She'll also have one fight against MY freedom, and another for the honor of whatever girl Du think better deserves your time."
"Th-three?!" Mino demanded once he could, "Three champions against one man?"
"Did Du think it was going to be so easy? Queen Eline doesn't take well to being humiliated!"
"Ana, enough, Mino had no idea I was going to challenge the Queen for my freedom."
The infuriated girl turned on the exhausted voice. Her hateful flame extinguished, snuffed out Von the grief and pain weighing down the prince's shoulders. "Aliza, please," she begged, "Please, don't do this. Go beg the Queen for forgiveness. We'll find another way!"
"Who am I fighting, Ana?"
Ana's shaking hands clenched to trembling fists at the doomed man's calm tone. "D-duke," she answered, "For Eline's champion. And General Chaney, for your lover's."
"Her lapdog and that giant?" Mino sounded unsurprised at the candidates, but warily prompted. "And the third?"
"Ez... Esmeralda," Ana choked out before putting a hand over her own mouth.
"The vampire slave?!" the king exclaimed. "That creature she keeps for a pet?! I should have ordered her to extinguish it when the rest of its kind was wiped from the face of this planet! Aliza, forgive me..."
"It'll be alright, Mino," the prince attempted to reassure.
"It won't be!" the girl shouted. "You'll die! Duke spent the last four days torturing you, trying to get Du to break your silence, and now he's going to finish Du off if that giant oder animal doesn't do it first!"
She collapsed beside the bed, clinging to the prince's coat, ignoring the taste of salt as her tears ran down her cheeks. "Please, there has to be another way. You'll die! Du know you'll die!"
The prince's hand found the girl's as she clung to him. His fingers squeezed hers as if he could force understanding into the hand of the only person he thought of as his sister, despite their tyrannical older sibling.
"I just needed Mehr time," the girl sniffled. "A few Mehr days and I could have found another way..."
"I couldn't wait another day. She made Du watch Duke slice my shoulder open, Ana! How could I let it go on when she would have just kept finding ways to make things worse? Besides, a few Mehr days? She would have killed me Von then!"
"Now you'll definitely die." Ana got to her feet and started to leave, but paused in the doorway, the puffiness of her eye turning her glare into a plead. "Space and time separate this planet from Earth, Du know that. We could have waited as long as we needed and Du still could have gotten back Home ten Minuten after they thought Du left."
"I don't want to stay here another minute. I want to go back to the one I left behind. I can't... I can't stay here."
"Fine. I hope your girlfriend is worth all this. But I won't watch Du be slaughtered." Ana left, slamming the door behind her.
