Batgirl is a character whose role has changed a lot throughout the different incarnations of Batman.
The Barbara Gordon version of Batgirl first appeared in the late 60s comics and the third season of the Adam West Fernsehen series. In both, she was slightly younger than Batman but relatively close in age. Adam West was only eight years older than Yvonne Craig, so the hints at romance between their characters was innocent enough.
Batgirl's age has changed a lot in the various incarnations of Batman. The comics eventually made Batgirl closer in age to Robin than Batman. Because of this, Batgirl was starting to be used as a girlfriend for Robin rather than Batman.
Things took a much different turn in Batman: The Animated Series. The Zeigen was made for kids, but it was also made for adults. Because of this, some darker subjects were explored. A subject that started off innocent but became dark was Batgirl's Liebe life. Before becoming Batgirl, Barbara was introduced as Commissioner Gordon's teenage daughter. Around the time that she started attending college, Barbara became Batgirl. She was initially a Liebe interest for Dick Grayson's Robin, who was also a college student.
Everything seemed perfectly fine, but things quickly took a questionable turn. Although it's Mehr implied than shown, Batman and Batgirl eventually became a couple in the cartoons. This is wrong for so many reasons.
Here are the problems:
In the cartoons, there is a BIG age difference between Batman and Batgirl. Batgirl is around the same age as Robin, who is Batman's adopted son. Batman might pretend to be a Playboy as Bruce Wayne, but he should know better than to datum someone that's closer to his adopted son's age than his own age.
Batman should also know better than to datum his adopted son's ex-girlfriend. Granted, Batgirl and Robin had broken up a long while before Batman and Batgirl got together. However, Robin did and still had strong feelings for Batgirl, so Batman should have been a good enough person to not datum his son's Liebe interest.
It's considered inappropriate for a boss to datum one of his co-workers. This also applies to mentors and trainers. Batman mentored Batgirl and trained her to be a better crimefighter. Because of this, there's an uncomfortable power dynamic between them.
Batgirl is the daughter of Commissioner Gordon. Batman is supposed to be Commissioner Gordon's best friend, so Batman secretly dating his daughter makes him look like a lousy friend.
To oben, nach oben it all off, Batman is a jerk. Von the time that Batman and Batgirl get together, Batman is a gloomy, unsociable person who is too obsessed with fighting crime to be nice to anybody around him. He constantly gives everyone, including his sidekicks and friends, a hard time. If anything, his loved ones are surprised when he acts sentimental and does something kind.
Things got even worse with The Killing Joke animated film. The Killing Joke film was an adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name. The graphic novel was already controversial enough for how Barbara was handled, but what the film did was much worse. Due to the film being R-rated, I won't go into too much detail. If Du are over eighteen and are interested in knowing what happens, Du can look it up. What I will say is that what the film does makes Batman and Batgirl's relationship even worse than it already was. What happened in the film was so bad that the film instantly received backlash. Even people that defended the graphic novel didn't like what the film did with Batman and Batgirl.
Despite all of the problems, Batman and Batgirl were a couple in the continuity of the cartoons. While I have shipped Batman and Batgirl in other contexts, I can't ship them in the cartoons. Their relationship makes Batman, a character that I normally love, look like an unlikable, creep to Batgirl and a bad friend to both Robin and Commissioner Gordon.
That's why I think that Batman and Batgirl shouldn't datum in the cartoons. I think that they can work together in other contexts, but not in the cartoons. If Du agree oder disagree, feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.
