5 Reasons Why Dean is Better Than Sam 

Okay so first up, I gotta say that writing this article was a lot harder than I thought it would be.

I’m a Dean girl through and through and have been since the first time I watched Supernatural. But I love Sam too and I had to constantly fight my instincts to try and say nice things about the youngest Winchester as well. But this is supposed to be all about Dean, so please forgive me Sam girls.

Also, trying to name out all the various reasons that I think Dean is better than Sam (or any other man for that matter) and keeping it down to just a few words, was not easy. But here goes…..

Okay so you’re probably thinking um yeah, so what? Isn’t everyone loyal to someone or something?

Well not like Dean Winchester, and while I agree that Sam can be loyal too, he just doesn’t seem to have it in the same quality or quantity as Dean. He is loyal almost to a fault and you’ll be hard pressed to find the elder Winchester giving up his allegiance to someone once they’ve earned it. Sam on the other hand, seems quite willing to jump ship whenever the mood strikes.

2. He loves his brother more than anything in the world

Yes I know this supposed to be all about Dean but one of the things I love most about Dean is how much he loves Sam.

He’s been taking care of his baby brother since he was practically a baby himself and even when they disagree, deep down he loves him. In fact I’m pretty sure that’s why he gets so angry with Sam sometimes, because he does love him and has always wanted what was best for him.

No one, and I mean no one, can cry like Dean Winchester.

And when you think about all the crap he’s gone through in his life (like his brother’s deaths and his own deaths, just to name a few things) how can you not expect him to shed a tear or two?

But the thing about Dean is that, even after his emotions have gotten the better of him and he’s maybe let go of a few tears, the next instant he’s ready for action and loaded for bear. I hate to say it but when Sam cries, he just looks sad.

I got into Supernatural late and the first episode I ever saw of the series was Folsom Prison Blues, back in season two. I remember very clearly the moment I decided that I loved Dean Winchester. It was about maybe ten minutes into the episode and he had already made me laugh out loud at least five or six times.

Once I went back and watched the show from the beginning, I realized that Dean uses humor as a way to deflect the horrible things that happen in his life. He’s had it rough since he was four- years-old and sometimes humor is his way to deal with it. Sam tries his hand at humor too, but he just doesn’t have anything on his older brother. Dean can crack me up not only with a pop-culture reference or a wacky one-liner, he can also do it with just a look.

I know I’ve always said that I’m a Dean girl through and through, but in some ways I’m also an Impala girl (I even own a very large stuffed version of the Impala) and since Dean drives it, that makes him better. Period.

Not only does he drive the Impala, he loves her and takes care of her as if she were his child. He calls her “Baby” and has rebuilt her with his own bare hands. He treats that car the way I wish some man would treat me. There, I said it.

In conclusion, I just have to say that I am a Dean girl and will always be a Dean girl. I have been since almost the moment I laid eyes on the older Winchester and nothing has ever caused me to waver in my love for him. To me, he will always be better than Sam because of all the reasons above and many more that I could name. I will never be a Sam hater but I will always, always, be a Dean lover.

So c’mon Dean girls (and boys), sound off and let me know why YOU love the oldest Winchester. I’d love to hear from you!

Can I post even though I’m in Sam’s corner? I love this article so much. You really hit the nail on the head with every point (As much as it pains me to say it!).

While I’m a Sam lover all the way, I still adore Dean. Your point about him crying made me LAUGH… because it is SO TRUE. No one cries quite like Dean Winchester with that single tear rolling down his cheek! He’s got that down to a science.

I have to give you the car, just because she’s awesome, and the way Dean acts with her is priceless.

He is funny, but also a complete idiot at times… but I guess that’s why we love him!

… I’m going to leave this comment at that because I’m slowly digging my own hole for my defense on Sam!

No worries my dear, as I cannot wait to see your Sam report and comment on it too. Like I said, I love him too so this was a little hard – even as a hard-core Dean Girl.

I almost added that one! It was actually on my list, but I was trying to keep it to five. LOL.

Okay, I feel bad for saying this but I am definitely NOT a Sam girl by any means. I like him well enough but most of the time I want to scream at him. So! That being said – *sigh* I love this so, so much. Almost as much as I love Dean. I was going to post a blanket comment to tell you that I LOVE YOU for writing this and for speaking collectively for Dean girls everywhere but there was too much I wanted to say.

When I saw that “He’s loyal” was your number one point I knew you and I were going to be on the same page. When I think of Dean the first thing I think of is loyalty. (ACTUALLY, I’m a liar. I think of freckles and eyelashes but VERY shortly after that I think of loyalty.) Sometimes his loyalty makes me INSANE and I just want to scream, “HE WOULDN’T DO THIS FOR YOU; WHY ARE YOU DOING IT FOR HIM??” but ultimately it’s one of my very favorite things about him.

Dean’s love for Sam makes me want to strangle him half the time. Sometimes I think Dean would be so much better off if he cut Sam loose (I’m sorry but I DO!!) but I also really love that it would never be an option. That, to me, is so real – I have people in my life like that. Though they make me crazy and sometimes my life is really worse off because they’re in it, I also love them to the core and would take the bad with the good any day of the week. It’s a great plot point and a big part of Dean’s charm.

Oh, the CRYING!! (The picture above KILLED ME.) Oh, Dean. With the ONE tear that sneaks out. You nailed it – the best thing about Dean crying is actually how he acts once he’s done. Like he’s got to make up for it by proving he’s tough again.

Dean has the sense of humor of a 9-year-old boy and yet it’s completely adorable. So unfair!

Perfect, perfect article. Great job – you really thought this through and it shows. The only things I would have added are completely shallow: freckles, eyelashes, and I love his bowlegged gait! As a Dean girl from day 1 this article warms my heart.

I don’t think I was negative! All I said was I am not a Sam girl by any means, which I’m not! Sam makes me mad sometimes but so does Dean. I didn’t say much about Sam intentionally as this is an article about Dean but when Kelly posts her article about why Sam is better than Dean I’ll gladly chime in on that!

1. He is more sympathetic to people than hitting on them. Sam would go to the people and help their feelings for the case. Sure over time he would hit on them, but not much as Dean.

2. The story revolves around him more. Think of Season 1 looking for Dad after Jess’s Death, Season 2 has the Psychic abilities discovered more, season 3, Sam’s desperation to save Dean, Season 4, Sam’s addiction to demon blood leads to the final seal being broken, season 5, Sam’s redemption over the Demon Blood addiction and sacrifices himself for the greater good, Season 6 becomes souless and then gets his soul and wants to redeem all he did wrong.

3. Sam got shirtless working out while Dean didn’t. Although I’m a guy I know woman prefer that as better and what got Season 6 a lot of praise.

4. Sam is the reason Dean keeps promises. Dean made a promise to stay with Lisa because of Sam. Dean kept a promise to watch over Sam from his dad. Dean also planned to keep the promise for his Dad to have to kill Sam if he couldn’t “save him”. Think of Sam in lockdown from When the Levee Breaks.

5. Another reason that debates among fans is that perhaps Sam is more attractive than Dean. Dean may be the ladies man, but that is probably why Sam is more attractive to girls is because once in a while he will get out of his love shell so to speak.

In my opinion I love Dean more because of the reasons you said, but I tried to find logical means, by showing why perhaps people would choose over Sam. Great job on your post. And great picture choices

1. Dean doesn’t hit on everyone and he’s certainly been sympathetic to people he hasn’t hit on.

2. No argument there but it’s actually one of the reasons I like Sam less.

3. I can assure you some of us women like a little mystery. What’s great about Jensen Ackles not taking his clothes off at the drop of a hat is that it’s exciting when you get to see a bit of shoulder or a flash of tummy and the occasional shirtless scene actually mean something. Oh and if you get to see his legs(like those awesome thighs….::feeling lightheaded::), it’s like Christmas.

4. Dean would keep his promises without Sam, he’s an honorable and loyal person and he’s kept promises that have nothing to do with Sam.

Totally agreed on point 4! I think that Dean comes off flakier than he actually is sometimes, and it’s probably intentional on his part. It’s like he doesn’t want people to know what a good guy he actually is. (Which actually makes it sweeter.)

2. It is an interesting that he is full of attention, but I think that’s what keeps people falling in love with Dean.

3. I wouldn’t know the mystery behind why women love Jensen Ackles entirely. But everyone picks one of them to be better, than both equally haha.

4. Its amazing how you would put without Sam…that must hurt a lot of fans, no offense. The thing that made Dean a total loyal person is because he feels he is totally responsible for Sam, thus he is doing a lot of the sympathetic things for Sam.

Aaah Hell-oooo Lady…can i say i COMPLETELY agree with you?? Yes, I love Sam..but I am, I was and I always will be a Dean girl..!!! There’s something about Dean that makes me all squishy inside..and If i may be so bold..? You’ve missed out an important part of ‘Why Dean is better than Sam’?…Bobby John!!! How can we forget how he was sooooooo tender with the baby and manly at the same time..and the way he was humming the lullaby?! Gaaah!! he killed me right then and there..

OMG too true! I did miss Bobby John but hey, that’s why I need all you other fangirls and fanboys, to remind me of the points I missed. Plus, if I’d written EVERY single reason I could come up with, we’d have been here all day! LOL.

OK, I’m minority here. I’m a devoted, passionate Samgirl. Maybe I’m more of the quiet, reserved sort of man. Or maybe I like (very) tall guys. Or maybe it’s the dimples I can’t resist. Jared is not as classically handsome as Jensen, but for some reason I find him more attractive. That’s not to say that I don’t admire Jensen too.

When I saw your article I was afraid it would be another of those nasty attacks to Sam or to Jared both as an actor and as a person. I’m glad it wasn’t. Sadly, some people think that because they are Dean fans, they thave a mission to attack Sam/Jared.

I too love Sam, I really do, but I’ve been a Dean girl since the instant I saw him in Supernatural! I agree with all your points, and yes there are many many superficial ones (could go on about them all night) but we all know them very well!! :)) I really admire Dean’s ability to keep humerous and light-hearted even in the worst circumstances; he’s always got a one-liner or a look that makes me laugh, even when he was hours from going to hell!! He’s so brave, and of course his love for his little brother is one of the reasons I fell for him in the first place… aside from the other very obvious reasons that is! And I agree with Kat… I love his bow-legs! <3

Good article. I noticed that Dean isn’t allowed to have any kudos without someone making it all about Sam, but I do commend you on your effort to make something about Dean, even if it only lasted a couple of comments.

I’m a Dean girl through and through, no matter how much the show tries to force me to love Sam, and I have a lot more reasons why I prefer Dean. In the end, I think Dean will always be the better man.

Actually I think most people have been awesome up here, which is great.

I will admit, I’ve been in love with Dean almost since the first minute I saw him. I too got hooked on Supernatural a little late and the first episode I ever saw was Scarecrow. I just thought Dean was so awesome and driving around in that car just amped up the sexy factor. I agree with all of your points. I especially agree with point #2. I completely identify with Dean there and understand why he gets so angry with Sam sometimes. No one can make you as angry as people you love. The only thing I would also add (and I suppose this ties in with him being fiercely loyal) is that he’s got a really big heart. Most people think Sam is the sensitive one, and to a large extent he is, but IMO Dean is all heart. It takes a lot for him to let you in, but once you’re there, you’re there for life. Oh that we all had someone in our lives that loved us as hard as Dean loves.

Oh I totally agree! I think Dean is a lot more sensitive than he lets on and does have a huge heart. He’s just really good at hiding it, which is another one of his defense mechanisms.

Dean is awesome. Right from the pilot I’ve felt he’s had more depth.

Dean has a huge heart and a genuine generosity of spirit and I’ve always felt that while Sam can “talk the talk”, Dean’s the one who really knows how to walk the walk when it comes truly feeling for others. He hunted to save people from the pain his family went through, not for revenge, not to make a point, but to help others.

No one will fight harder for you than Dean Winchester and I think that is why he embodies some of what is best about people and is sort of humanities champion. It’s why so often people will follow him and why he’s really kind of held to an unfairly high standard by those around him, ones they don’t even hold themselves to. They need him to be strong and they need him hold the line so they know where there own lines are.

But Dean’s also very down to earth, he knows how to enjoy the little things. He’s had it exceptionally tough lately but I think he still has a lot of that making lemonade out of lemons aspect to his personality.

Ok, I igree with you but i think you leve aside one iportant point. he is and always will be the strength in his family and to those who are around him, when he was a kid we was his mom strenght whenever john and mary had problems, then he became john’s strenght when john came from a hunt it was Dean who was there to give strength, The reason that Sam still is there is because of Dean if Dean were’nt there who knows what happen with Sam, Bobby didn’t pull the trigger at one point because of Dean because he made a promisse to him, the reason that Castel supports the winchester from the beggining is because of Dean, because he knew he can trust him, and if Dean went trough what he went through and was willing to go down trowing punches why not Cas.

Anyway I see the pilot episode and probably half of the first season, i stop for a while and went back on season 3 and i been a Fan ever since, Let’s be honest they’re both very atractive (Dean and Sam) and at some poit i realize i have to take a side either Sam or Dean i went for Dean for some of hte reson previosly mention but there’s his great ability or curse to love that everyone is aware but is been directed to Sam and the impala but i think that at least i love Dean because he knows how to love how he cares for his brother and the impala, and no mather what happen with his dad he loves him, and if you find a guy that is strong, protective, loving, loyal, handsome funny with so much passion (and i’m not talking abouth phisical passion wich he also have) and i can go on and on and on it will come on top no matter what.

Now no offense to any Sam girl but we just haven’t have the chance to know Sam in that matter, at least not as well as we know Dean

I’m one of the “like ‘em both” folks (guess we are a small group…) but I also need my Cas to be complete. LOL…..

Honestly, I guess I would fail the loyalty test, since I like early seasons Sam better and later seasons Dean better. Oh, my…..

But, in my own defense, reading the reasons to like one or the other better, well, I agree with almost all of them – on both sides, so does that make me wishy washy?? So be it. I want them both!

Lol, I loved the crying part….it’s true…all of Dean’s emotions can be summed up in ONE SINGLE MAN TEAR!

For all of his faults and issues….Dean is an amazing character. He’s a great blend of sarcastic and sensitive. He’s got a very Superman-esque complex….it’s his duty to save everyone, but no one can save him. He’s got to carry that alone, even when others offer to help. But he pushes away the dark stuff, deep down inside of him, so that he can get up and face another day. That’s very admirable.

Haha, gotta give you the Impala…aside from a few folk, it’s the only thing Dean truly treasures and his actions speak volumes about what she means to him. It’s his last link to his past, someone that’s always there for him, and also the most important object in the world.

you nailed it sister, every reason you gave is why I love him so and will always back his play no matter what. I love Sam and understand how hard Dean is on him but it all comes from his heart. He is all heart. And so good to look at !

He also looks pretty hardcore sexy with a gun in his hand!!! He has great taste in music and he is the funniest! I am a major dean lover!! My dream car is the impala!

I told my mom I wanted an impala for my birthday this year… she got me a little mini one, it is the best gift I have ever in my life gotten because it reminds me of dean!!!

I have been a Dean girl since the very first episode of Supernatural (and a Jensen Ackles fan since Days of Our Lives!). I love Sam too, but there is just no comparison for me. For the reasons you named above, and so many more, Dean Winchester is the bee’s knees! lol I love his character sooo much! Besides being insanely hot, loyal, and badass, he is also hilarious, which is the sexiest trait a man can have. My fave Supernatural moments are all about Dean. His “Eye of the Tiger” performance, his “acting the role of Dean Winchester” scene, and I could go on and on. He’s the best!
