"And I don't feel like kids venturing on their own is a special thing, I've seen that in many shows/movies." It refers to Stand by Me, because they are four characters and they walk on train tracks a lot. It's just a nice reference/nod to that movie. I sure thought of that movie when I watched those scenes. Those scenes had a Stand By Me essence to them for me as well. Even the scenes in the basement.
