Idris Elba returns for BBC America’s two-part event series alongside new co-star Rose Leslie (“Game of Thrones”)
Golden Globe winner Ruth Wilson will not reprise her role on “Luther,” TheWrap has learned.
The actress played the psychotically brilliant Alice Morgan on the U.K.’s gritty crime drama, foil to Idris Elba‘s darkly heroic lead Detective chief inspector John Luther. Elba has reprised his role on BBC America’s new two-part miniseries, which began production on Tuesday and will air in the fall.
Michael Smiley and Dermot Crowley are also returning to reprise their roles, as Benny Silver and DSU Martin Schenk respectively, but the BBC America two-parter is otherwise filled with new faces. “Game of Thrones” breakout star Rose Leslie has joined the series. Her fiery red hair is certainly reminiscent of Wilson’s Alice character, but Leslie will play the character Emma Jones.
Wilson, meanwhile, recently won a Golden Globe for her work opposite Dominic West on Showtime’s “The Affair.”
Other new “Luther” co-stars include Laura Haddock (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” “The Inbetweeners Movie”), Darren Boyd (“Fortitude,” “Spy”), John Heffernan (“Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell,” “Ripper Street”) and Patrick Malahide (“Indian Summers,” “The Paradise”).

Written and created by Neil Cross and directed by Sam Miller (“No Good Deed,” “Fortitude”), “Luther” is a BBC In-House Drama Production and BBC America co-production distributed by BBC Worldwide. It was commissioned by Ben Stephenson, controller for BBC Drama Commissioning and Charlotte Moore, controller for BBC One. The executive producer is Elizabeth Kilgarriff for BBC Drama Production, England, and the producer is Marcus Wilson.
“It’s very exciting to have Idris Elba back as DCI John Luther and to be in East London shooting the show’s fourth installment. Neil Cross has pulled out all the stops to make this the biggest, scariest story yet, and it’s a privilege to welcome such a glittering array of acting talent to our already stellar cast,” Kilgarriff said.
