Hi all, here is a picture of my Ferret, Frank. He escaped this morning and killed my daughter's rabbit as Du can see. Have any of Du had any similar experiences with ferrets attacking other animals? Poor Hayley is heartbroken.

Ferrets Antwort

There are two possibilities to why that happened.

~ Aggressive behavior ~
Ferrets are known to be aggressive and for biting a lot. It's recommended to keep the ferrets away from children and small Tiere until the ferrets have been trained how to behave around them. The frettchen can Zeigen aggressive behavior out of fear, stress oder they simply were born aggressive. However, if Frank had been born aggressive, he would've shown aggressive behavior towards everyone, not just the rabbit.

~ Hunting ~
Ferrets from a special kind of breed aren't aggressive at all, but are natural hunters. It's in their blood to hunt.
Why I'm mentioning this? Because ferrets are commonly used for RABBIT HUNTING.
Du can read about this here under the "Ferreting" section;

Ferrets naturally despise rabbits. It's recommended to keep these two Tiere as far away from each other as possible since they naturally can't get along.
Another thing to keep in mind is that rabbits are extremely sensitive. Rabbits can get a heartattack just from being close to a ferret. The frettchen doesn't have to attack oder Zeigen aggressive behavior to scare them.

A person doesn't need to have personal experience to know about this. The ferrets' aggressive behavior and use for rabbit hunting are basic facts about ferrets that all frettchen owners must be aware of before buying a ferret. Didn't Du check ferrets up before getting one?

Thanks for the info, unfortunately I was unable to check up on ferrets before getting Frank, he belonged to my late Father who only passed recently and had nowhere left to go so we took him in with us. As far as I know, Frank had never shown any aggressive nature towards any other living thing when my father had him, he was always handled regularly and as my father had nobody else at home, he spoke to Frank as if he was another person. Granted, Frank does not get the same level of attention from us as he did from my Father but surely this would not be a reason for this sudden change in behaviour? We have tried to keep things as normal as possible for Frank since the loss of our father and my wife has sagte that Frank must be able to sense that I was my father's son as Frank seems to prefer my company most of all in his new home, she says it is almost like he has made a brotherly bond. I have my doubts about this and I think the only reason he is closer to me than anyone else is due to the fact that after he stahl, stola one of my steroid supplements and seemed to enjoy them, I use them as a treat when he has behaved well. Do Du think I am maybe spoiling him Von giving him treats? Everyone else in the family gave Mehr attention/affection to the rabbit so do Du think it was maybe a jealousy thing?
