I still think Ariel should go next. She doesn't make good decisions and is a bit foolish at times.

With Ariel she knew about Ursula and what she was getting herself into. Even during Poor Unfortunate Souls she was very skeptical and showed so in facial expressions. She considered it, knew what she was getting, knew the consequences, and in the end decided to take a chance for her dream and for love. Merida on the other hand didn't know anything about the witch, wasn't specific on what she wanted, didn't receive any knowledge on what she was to expect, didn't consider any consequences, didn't ask what the cake would specifically do to her mother, and was just all like "So it will change my fate? Okay, bye!" In my opinion Ariel is obviously smarter than Merida.

Both are called dumb because of 1 action, I personally just think they were inexperienced. I think most young people would do something stupid after their entire collection was destroyed or whatever is important to them got destroyed (like Merida's bow).

Though, I think Merida is a bit smarter than Ariel because of the reasons KataraLover stated. Ariel knew Ursula's reputation and she still went through with it. Merida just didn't know, that doesn't make her dumber to me.

Yes but Ariel knew what she was getting, where's Merida did not. Merida didn't try to ask any questions, she was just like "I want the spell" and Ariel asked questions so she'd have knowledge. For me I think having knowledge of what you're getting yourself into is better than not knowing what you're getting yourself into. But hey, that's just me.

I still stand by what I said. Merida is shown learning her princess skills (though it is not seen as not being bad at it), and can archer while all Ariel is shown what she is good at is collecting and singing. Merida figured out the way to get out of her position and did that herself. What have we seen Ariel do that was intelligent? Especially more so than Merida?

In Ariel's defense, she had herself well put together for the most part (shark scene) and she was willing to learn about an entire different culture.

Definitely. She KNEW Ursula was a villain, she knew what she was getting into, she knew the deal wasn't in her favor, but she still went through with it. To me that seems a lot more stupid than anything Merida did. We see Merida learning the skills needed to be a princess, how to shoot, and she figures out how to break the spell. Plus she manages to survive for three days in the wilderness. I think she's pretty smart.

She is quick thinking when trying to get away from the shark, which most of us wouldn't be able to do. She doesn't stand or float, whatever the case maybe with mermaids, in fear while danger comes to her and saves herself and her friend. She does consider the consequences and was quite skeptical, as I've mentioned before. Plus the fact that she learned to walk in like five minutes, which takes a human baby like a year or so to learn how to walk, and let's face it she was basically just an overgrown baby when she got her legs so that's impressive in my opinion. Plus she seemed to adapt to human life, which is not only a completely different culture but a completely different species, quite quickly.

Merida in my opinion didn't really do anything particularly smart, besides find a loop whole in the rules of her betrothal. Merida and her princess lessons aren't really helping her much, since she pays no attention to them and spends her time doodling. She also didn't figure out how to break the spell, it was just dumb luck when she admitted her mistake and told her mother she loved her at the last minute. Ariel is quite clever in my opinion, but hey that's just me and I know many disagree with me.

I agree with KataraLover. And as I said and have repeated so much I feel like a broken record. You guys are confusing intelligence with being impulsive. Ariel is very smart. All she was doing was following her heart, and that doesn't make her dumb. Alot of cynical people on here. And Ariel may have trusted a witch, but so did Merida , and that got her mother turned into a bear. Just a note about foolishly going to Ursula ( about trusting Ursula- as you say, I dont think Ariel had any option, she didnt know her motives and she was reluctant, you see her sign the contract while looking away. She has morals). Plus we don't know why Ursula was banished. And Ariel goes with the saying " Love is Blind" as do all the Princesses.

And Ariel DID trust her- she honestly believed all Ursula did was help people and acted shocked when it turned out she wasn't.

There is nothing cynical about that and I'm kinda annoyed that you're throwing out accusations just because it isn't going your way.

Completely unrelated to this discussion above, I think Merida doesn't think things through, which shows intellectual immaturity, then gets really apologetic and upset when it didn't work out. Basically, she is mentally a child.

It seems lately that Ariel constantly gets called selfish or not very intelligent. That is why I used the word cynical. Has nothing to do with going my way or not. She is my favorite Princess, so if she is getting called unintelligent and selfish, with some questionable reasoning in my opinion- Im going to use the word cynical ( negative). Im not arguing about this again, but I think both words are used towards her unjustly. So Agree to Disagree. Another reason I don't care is just cause a poll may call her unintelligent doesn't mean its true. There I have given my five cents worth. Im done, thats all I am saying on the matter, and I have a right to.
I also agree with you Flutey Girl, you made some points that I have observed in Merida.

^^You're correct, all the DPs have at least one intelligent trait or action, and it's not like Disney wanted to make it's main characters and role models valley girls or something.

But every princess did at least one stupid thing in her movie, and I made this poll to find opinions on who was cleverest throughout the movie.

And it kind of seems like your voting Merida out just because you like Ariel best, but forgive me if I'm making assumptions.

About Ariel ONLY having common sense during the shark attack. Whether you think she was smart or not, that's the point I was making with Pocahontas. Pocahontas basically has no common sense... I wouldn't love her any differently but I never considered her as smart.

@Macy, Im sure your assumption happens more often than not. We will never know. Since we are all passionate about who we like more than others. But I do have my reasons for thinking Ariel is smart and I didnt elaborate about Merida, but Flutey Girl and KataraLover basically made the case about Merida for me. I am getting more and more used to her, I am indifferent about her ( Merida- and I go by the few clips I have seen of her, cause I had no interest in the movie). But as I said, underneath whose to say we all don't swing a little to our favorites. This is all my opinion, but Im sure some of it holds true. On a lighter note, Im a Cancer we are very passionate about the things we like. - just a fun fact. Im sure other horoscopes hold the same. And yes every Princess has a " Ditzy Moment" ....being the product of fairytales they are part of Idealistic worlds, but each of them- (yes even Merida) has a trait that we can look up to. I wish I could be an archer like Merida, that is one thing I admire about her. Bet no one thought I would ever say that. LOL

Damn, I missed so much. I agree that all of the DPs did one stupid thing at least once in their movie, and I am glad that this argument ended when it was still small and before it got personal.

Both of them are my lower smart princesses. So they bout should go out one after the other in anyway.
