Well... I'm writing a movie since like one year and half ago. So... a novel should take more time I think. :S

As long as it takes. My play writing teacher suggests writing it, then sticking it in a drawer for at least a month (maybe two) and coming back to look at it so you have fresh eyes to edit. I wrote a play in two days once, but it's taken me a year and a half to have the courage to go over and edit it properly. I'm writing a play now that's taking me three weeks. Then again, it took Thoreau years to finish Walden, and Danielewski finally published House of Leaves after ten years of constructing it. link wrote a play a day for a whole year.

In short-- it takes as long as it takes.

That's if you're determined and serious about completing it. It would probably seriously take me this long to complete a novel. Beginning one, no problem, but continuing nad trying a conclude... hardest part. I swear I could write a neverending book.

it depends on how bad it wants out, will it write its self, or will it not want to come out?

Golden_Eyed picked take as much time as Du can it should take a lifetime to make a truly great nove:
If you put yourself to it, it could take a minimum of 6 months. But if it's really involved, complex, and complicated (like my series Unwelcome Stranger) it could take a lifetime. It depends on the book, the subject, and how you approach it.

A truly great novel has time and care put into it, but also doesn't keep giving you writer's blocks. I think a great novel just flows from a pen.

I've been writing a novel for more than one year but I've just begun (even if the story is definitive) coz it's a love story set in a particular historical time so I keep finding obstacles, coz of course I don't wanna put historical mistakes in my book!

sweet_n_silly picked Depends on how much time Du put into it, and etc.:
well, there's lots of factors that go into it. How much time do you put into it? How much of that time is spent in writer's block? How complicated is the story line? How long will it be? How's the grammar and little details in the first draft? How many other rough drafts will there be? How long will it take to reach the next rough draft? How much time is going into research to make it accurate? Is it being done for fun? (most authors don't get published until at least the fifth book) How serious are you taking it? Is it divided into chapters? see, there's lots of stuff that helps determine it.

I think it depends on how much time you are willing to put into it, how much of that time you spend developing it (you want a good balance of not developing at all and developing so much you never get around to writing) and how big an idea it is. There are a lot of things.

i agree. i don't get 2 write a lot so it takes me a long time, but if i did get 2 write a lot say, a 200 page book would only take me a month, month and a half. it just depends how often u take some time 2 write it

A day if you're that stupid to write a two-word novel (which I have never seen), or a lifetime, if you are enthusiastic about what you wrote and you get a LOT of writer's blocks...like me. And never give yourself a certain date when you should be finished... the result is 999999.999999999999999999999999999999% of the time...

a piece of crap.

For myself, one month. I've done it before, I can do it again. Though that doesn't include editing. With editing I'd say three to four months. Though for just anyone in random I'd agree with Anywhere from a day to a lifetime. Because depending on how long the book is, how busy the author is, and many other variables, it can take a long time. Book writing is a challenge.

First, I gotta plan it out, you know drafts, backgrounds of characters, settings, all that jazz. Then, I have to think of the story itself. Sometimes, especially if it's animal fantasy, I like to draw what I depict my characters to look like. Then, I FINALLY write it out. That'll take me a few weeks if I REALLY work hard. Usually I think of the title in the very beginning or the very end when it's all finished. Personally, I've never finished writing a story. But there's one I'm trying to work on called The Elf King's Son. I know, crappy title; but that's what I got...

Depends on how much time and effort you put into it. It also depends on if you have a lot of ideas on how the novel should go or if you don't have any ideas at all, which, would take basically a year.

RoriLei picked It depends on your Schreiben speed and idea flow:
Some people write books quick. I, for one, am writing at least five stories at once because I'm ADD and can't focus on one, and I've been working on two of them for two years, two of them for one year, and I just started another. This isn't counting the poetry I do on the side, my partially finished movie and comic book scripts, and writing for school
