"Thank you, miss. We'll look over your application as soon as we can," the nice receptionist smiled. I nodded thankfully. She eyed me curiously, and glanced at my application. "Um, how old are you?" she asked.
"Twenty two," I said, without breaking a sweat. I'd been prepared for that. I'm actually fifteen, but maybe I could pass for a very short, very young looking adult. She nodded, but since she had no proof I was lying, she let me go. I walked down the streets, the sun beating down on me. I could tell Von the brightness in the sky, I was late. I picked up the pace, and started running. Hunde barked at me, and people looked at me funny, but I didn't care. I'd be in deep shit if I was late again.
"Shelby, you're late!" Paige shouted at me when I came in the door. She was holding our new baby sister, Auburn.
"I know, I know," I said, throwing my bag on the table. The place reeked of smoke, thanks to Mom's new boyfriend. I turned around and took Auburn from Paige. "Ok, I got it. Du can go now." Paige rolled her eyes, then patted my head and ran out the door to work. I sighed then looked around, bouncing Auburn lightly on my hip.
"Shelby! Where's Mom?!" Kirsten shouted from across the house. She appeared no later, the house is tiny, and looked at me agitated. She's twelve. We have the same light, karamell brown hair, but that's it. We share the same hair color as our mother. She's my half sister. Same with Paige, same with Auburn, and same with my other little sister, Sage. None of us have the same father. I'm not trying to say anything bad about my mother, though. It's not her fault. She dates guys who seem fairly nice, then they take advantage of her.
"How should I know?!" I shouted at her. She gets on my nerves the most. She wrinkled her nose and stuck her tongue out at me, then ran off. "Where's Sage?!" I shouted after her.
"How should I know?!" she mocked. I groaned. Sage never answered, so she wasn't in the house. I looked out in the very tiny backyard, but she wasn't there. I was starting to panic.
"Sage?! Sage!" I shouted. I went out to the front, and stood in the front yard, shouting her name. No answer. Crap, crap, crap. I'm dead. Paige would kill me if I Lost Sage. I called into the house, telling Kirsten to stay home. I jogged up the streets, still holding Auburn, calling Sage's name.
"Shelby!" I whirled around, but saw it was only Kirsten running after me.
"I thought I told Du to stay at the house!" I growled at her. I didn't need two loose kids to worry about.
"Mrs. Geller sagte she saw her at the park this morning!" Kirsten said. She turned off in the other direction, heading for the park. I ran after her, but Mehr slowly, careful not to drop Auburn.
"Sage!" Kirsten and I shouted. No one was at the park. My herz was racing. Now I was getting really scared. I swore at myself, and my eyes were starting to sting with tears.
"Shelby, Du can't," Kirsten said, her voice cracking. "You can't give up now!" I nodded.
"I won't," I sniffed. "Here. Take Auburn home. And stay there," I sagte through my teeth. For once, she listened. She took the baby from my arms, and started home, occasionally shouting Sage's name. I turned away, looking around for any sign that she was here.
I walked all over town. No Sage. I was beginning to lose all hope. Maybe I should just go find Paige at work and tell her... I ended up in a field. Sage likes to run, she's like a freaking horse, so I'd thought maybe she'd be here. I took one last deep breath.
"Sage!" I screamed with everything I had. Nothing. Tears flowed down my cheeks. I closed my eyes.
This can't be happening.
"Shelby?" a small voice said. I gasped.
"Sage!?" I shouted once more.
"Shelby!" I ran in the direction of her voice; into the woods Von the field. I screamed her name again and again, and thankfully she answered each time getting closer and closer. Then I saw her. The seven Jahr old little girl ran into my arms, and I squeezed her tight.
"Oh my God! What the hell are Du doing here?!" I growled at her. I think the relief was almost over. Now I was furious.
"I was playing," she pouted. "I was trying to make a baum house..." I sighed. "Do Du want to see it?" she asked quietly.
"Not now, kid. Maybe another time. Let's just get Home before Mom does." I picked her up and carried her home.
"You found her?!" Kirsten asked hopefully when she heard the screen door open.
"Yes," I said. She sighed, and glared at Sage, who hid her face in my hair.
"Where's Mommy?" she asked when I set her down on the ground.
"Probably at Matt's," Kirsten sagte indifferently. Matt's Mom's new boyfriend, and Auburn's father. I was quite surprised to hear he was sticking around when Mom found out she was pregnant. Still, he's not my Favorit guy.
Later that night, Paige came Home from work. She's seventeen, and able to work late. She carried in the mail with her, and set it on the counter. It was around eight o'clock.
"Go through that," she ordered me. I nodded and started looking through the mail. "School time," she sagte unenthusiastically to Sage and Kirsten. We're kind of poor, and Mom's not around much, so... school's not exactly our first priority. They started their English lesson.
I went through the bills, making sure each one was paid and taken care of.
Then I found the mortgage.
"Um... Paige?" I whispered. She waved me away, as Kirsten stumbled to pronounce the word, conscience. "Paige," I sagte again. She groaned and looked at me, irritated.
"What?!"
"Did Du pay the mortgage for this month?" She ran the words over in her head.
"Um, no. Matt sagte he'd take care of it for this month." I sighed, and threw the bill onto the counter.
"Yeah, well... He didn't." Her eyes widened, and she came over Von me. "They raised it up," I sighed. She looked over the bill, disbelieving.
"That fucker..." she mumbled.
"We'll be able to pay it, right?" I asked. She sagte nothing. "Right?"
"I don't know..." I whimpered.
"But, we have to! Du have the money, right? Du have to! I spent the money from my last job on the payment from the hospital when Auburn was born!"
"I don't know," she sagte again. "Matt and Mom have been sneaking money from me for cigarettes and... stuff." That sounded like them. So childish, even though Mom was in her late thirties now. It angered me. Why couldn't she just act her own age?
I started to panic. I knew what this meant, but I didn't want to think it. This couldn't be happening. The hate I had for Matt burned greater. This was his fault... and ours for thinking he'd actually do what he said, but that was beside the point.
"Is everything ok?" Sage asked, noticing the sudden tension in the room. I swallowed and looked at Paige. Would it? Paige sagte nothing.
"No," I spoke for her. Who were we kidding? Paige makes minimum wage, I Lost my job, and Mom doesn't work. And we had nowhere to go.
"What's gonna happen if we don't pay it," Kirsten asked, her voice trembling.
"We're going to get evicted," Paige sagte gravely.
