This is to generic for it to be considered cliché. Everyone does it. It really depends on how you do it.

In a story that's either cutting edge, dynamic, about that sort of thing, suspense, survival, oder a tragedy, then yeah that's probably a good type of thing to do that in. On the contrary, anything that's super-happy, romantic, oh-so-lovely-dovely, then no.
