I remember visiting this website once...
It was called The Walking Dead's Negan is Just Like Government
Here's some stuff I remembered seeing:
After watching 6 seasons of The Walking Dead, we’re now watching Rick and the rest of the community face their worst enemy yet, Negan. This smooth-talking, barbwire-wrapped bat wielding, bloodthirsty new antagonist has a higher claim to these lands than anybody else. He also happens to have a massive army, referred to as the “Saviors,” which enforces said claim.
Negan and the Saviors are here to bring order and security to his land. If you live on his land, you now work for him. A fraction of your production (he decides the amount) goes to him. If you behave in a way he doesn’t approve, you’ll likely get thrown into a cell, or worse. If he decides you can’t be trusted with weapons, he takes them from you. If you try to resist him or the Saviors, you will be beaten or even killed, so don’t even think about it!
Our beloved characters are clearly not happy living under Negan’s rule, and many of us viewers are not big fans of his either. However, when the show is over, we will go back to our jobs, where a large chunk of our pay is taken away by an institution that tells all of us how we’re allowed to behave and what weapons we can be trusted to own, all in the name of order and security. If we don’t follow the rules made by this institution, or refuse to let it take from us what it claims as theirs, then we can be met with violence, thrown in cells, or even killed. Does any of that seem eerily similar?
So why are many of us viewers hoping to see the fall of Negan, but don’t feel the same way about our own government? It could be that we get to vote for the people get to take our money and make these rules, whereas those on the show had no such option. However, our most recent presidential election just left us with a choice between two of the most hated candidates in history.
It also could be that Negan conveys his message very differently. Anybody who wants reelection in our government wouldn’t dare say the kinds of things that Negan says, nor would they likely endorse capital punishment via baseball bat. Though every time they choose to continue taking money from our paychecks, they’re essentially making the same claims as him, just in a much more subtle way.
Perhaps it’s about more than just how he came to power, or about his methods. Here’s another way of looking at it: We have watched these people manage to form a community that works without any need for somebody else governing over it. After getting rid of a few bad apples and eliminating a horde of walkers, the people of Alexandria grew to be peaceful and productive. They all found their own roles in society, worked together, helped each other when needed, and even recently began trading with another nearby community.
Then, Negan came into their lives and decided that they all need to pay him taxes and start living by his rules. The reason why we hate Negan is quite possibly because he interfered with a free-market society by bringing forced coercion, just like government. Meanwhile, we don’t share the same feelings towards our own government, because none of us have experienced a world without such coercion, and a large majority of us have grown up taught that we simply could never function without it.
…or maybe it’s just because Negan doesn’t build roads.
