Damn fine work on this one. Quite similar to your previous work on Toy Story in that you explore a seemingly superficial kids’ movie on a deeper level, but also a lot more polished.
Also just noticed that Lord Business’ cape is Will Ferrell’s tie. Nice touch.
I loved how totally committed the movie was to it’s world. I just about lost it when the ghost came in dangling on an actual string.
I find it interesting when memorable quotes from different sources contradict each other. It says a lot about the piece of fictions worldview.
I absolutely loved this and gave it the same rating as well. Always been a fan of Lego, particularly of the Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Batman lines. When this film was announced in 2008, I had no idea how it would turn out but was really anticipating it, and this didn’t disappoint one bit. Phil Lord and Chris Miller completely had a handle on the tone, the humour, the look and were even able to sneak in commentary on conformity, creativity and the importance of play. I found it very clever that Everything Is Awesome is a slyly subversive parody of mass-produced corporate pop but is also the movie’s theme song.Of course, there is a level of hypocrisy (perhaps akin to Unikitty’s own hypocrisy) in the villain being named “Lord Business”, when Lego is a sizeable corporate empire that even has a bricks-in-the-boardroom business consultancy service called Lego Serious Play.
I agreed with you that this isn’t a lefty film as it show both view of how chaos vs order. While this film is against order the ended sort of hint that the sequel could be about chaos as it would introduce the kid little sister who is chaos
I just watched The Lego Movie today and this shows up?
I got to say though, my first impression of the movie wasn’t anything religious or political. I focused more on the esteem stuff, because at the moment I’m facing those issues.
I usually felt bad about the ‘chosen one’ trope because it singles out that one person and that’s just how it is. The thing that I loved about this movie was that it showed that there isn’t a ‘one’ there can be many, it could be anybody, and it doesn’t require anything more than to believe in themselves. That moment when Lego Morgan Freeman said that, I thought “This is exactly what was said in Kung Fu Panda” However, I think this movie took it a huge step forward in showing empathy towards the other characters that have yet to realize that they are also special.
I loved that Emmet showed compassion towards Lord Business in telling him that he was talented, and that he doesn’t have to be the bad guy.
I loved how WyldStyle and Emmet had that moment where she admitted she wanted to be the special and he admitted that he felt great being told he was special. At that point she revealed her real name. Throughout the movie you could see that she was someone who kept trying to be cool (she hates the pop song and it was hinted that she changed her name several times to different crazy cool sounding things before) Emmet started off trying to fit in and ended up fitting in so well that people didn’t even know he was around. Both characters felt like being a certain way, yet they’re fine as they are.
We take so much of ourselves for granted that we forget great qualities of ourselves, sometimes we do need to be told sincerely that we are talented and have good qualities in ourselves to feel proud of. If not, then we just keep feeling like we’re going nowhere and end up feeling like there’s nothing to feel good about. The next thing is support and belief in their abilities and anyone can do great things. A little compassion can go a long way.
It’s not just to compromise between two opposing ways, but to do that through empathy and compassion. Maybe I’m throwing in my personal stuff, but that’s how I see this movie.
Atop the Fourth Wall is a show about bad comic books. We find the surreal and the stupid and we break down page by page why they\'re idiotic to show how they can be improved. Along the way, there are also quick 5-panel sum-ups of comics, a Let\'s Play of Star Trek: Elite Force, and the History of Power Rangers.
