"If Du loved Luke, why do Du hate Piper?
Luke Castellan is the Percy Jackson fandom’s Severus Snape as the Bücher were coming out. Du liked him a bit, then he did something bad and stechpalme, holly smokes Du wanted him dead. Then in the last book he completely changed and people cried and people wanted him back and it was so sad, et cetera.
He’s charismatic, welcoming, charming, friendly, approachable, smart, fit, funny, experienced, he was Percy’s hero from the start (thus making us like him) and he did Zeigen genuine Liebe to Annabeth and Thalia in the early Bücher and in The Demigod Diaries. But even if he did the right thing at the end, Luke wasn’t a very good guy. He got bitter, ambitious, unforgiving, cruel even. And I know that he has a hard past, but Thalia sagte so herself in Last Olympian: that doesn’t forgive what he’s done, many Heroes have had pasts just as hard. But we happily forgive Luke because in the end he did the right thing.
Now I’m going to bring in another character: Piper McLean.
Certainly, she has flaws. That’s what we like about Rick Riordan’s characters, remember?
But Piper is just, fair, kind, tough, fierce, a quick learner, caring, down to earth, somewhat aggressive, and smart. I can literally name a character who has each of these qualities that the fandom adores. She has a very good and insgesamt likable personality. However, Piper is also very dependent on Jason, attention-seeking, unconfident and ungrateful at times and she can be tempted to do the easy thing that would benefit her. And the fandom hates her for it, especially the last one.
Piper can be tempted to do the easy thing that would benefit her. Like, letting Jason and Percy fight it out in Mark of Athena, giving Jason and Leo to the giants so that her father could be safe, Gaia has gegeben her opportunities to bail on her Friends many times… But in the end, she does the right thing every time. Never has Piper made the selfish and easy move.
Luke was tempted to do what would benefit him too. Joining Kronos’ army, blackmailing Silena, using Annabeth (Annabeth- who was once his little sister!) as bait, poisoning Thalia’s baum (Thalia was his best friend, and there was near-definitely a Liebe interest at some point), giving up his body to Kronos, having demigods fight to the death in the Labyrinth, getting Percy bitten Von a skorpion in Lightning Thief, nearly starting a civil war among the gods… And he actually did it.
Luke actually did the wrong thing after a life of being trained as a demigod and living out life lessons while on the run. Piper never did with a sheltered life of trying to find herself and figure out who she was and what she wanted.
Now I’m not saying that it’s the end of the world that Luke made a mistake. ”Everyone’s allowed to make mistakes” people will scream at me. Well then let Piper nearly make mistakes too!
I understand that Piper’s set of flaws can be very annoying to people. Du will never hear me call her my favourite character. But for gods’ sake, that doesn’t mean she is Gaia and Kronos incarnated, that doesn’t mean Du have a right to bash her, that doesn’t mean she’s a bad character, and that doesn’t mean Du get to call her a Mary-Sue. If we let this behavior fly with Luke Castellan, than Piper McLean gets to consider dancing with the devil too.
An interesting Frage is: why are we hating on Piper for something Luke got away with?
Because Piper has had a sheltered life so we’re assuming that nothing can be hard and difficult for her? (Wrong: You’re basically saying that because Du could have it worst, your problems are nothing. That’s like going to someone with a stage III cancer and saying “well, it could be stage IV!”) I think the answer lies in the fact that Luke was an attractive, smexy villain. Piper is supposed to be a good character, so we don’t let her even think about doing something bad. And, let’s face it, girls are always held at high standards of being good.
Also, I think we’re also comparing Piper to Annabeth a lot, which isn’t faire to her since there’s nearly no character in PJO/HoO that can compare to Annabeth’s life of training and hardship and experience. Whereas with Luke, we just called him “Luke” and that was that.
So here I gave Du something to compare Luke to: Piper. Is Piper really that bad?"
