Well, there was a story in the comics that explains how Sonic got his super-speed Von absorbing the energy out of one of his Uncle Chuck's rings when Dr. Robotnik/Eggman made a mech out of his washing machine (read "Sonic the Hedgehog: The Beginning"). Now, he is the third fastest beliebt character on out planet.
The first happens to be regenbogen Dash from MLP (I was kinda shocked, but oh well).
The Sekunde is The Flash from DC Comics (unless Sonic turns into his super oder hyper form).

sonic is fast because he has mystical powers.in one episode of sonic underground,his"special abilities"were taken away during a trip to an alternate universe,and this included his speed-no physical abilities were removed,so this signifies that sonic's ability to run fast can be pinned down to some form of magic.

idk...i think that his super speed comes down to incredible reflexes. your idea would be applicable to Sonic if Du were just talking about his running speed, but that wouldn't explain how he can dodge so quickly too
He has a mystic medallion that he got from his mother, Queen Alenna, which give him all his powers including his Super Speed; Sonic Super Spin; and Sonic Spin Dash. His twin sibs also have medallions that grant them their powers, Sonia and her Sonia Spin; and Manic doesn't have any powers. Sucks for Manic!
Since Sonic's timeline takes place in the future(some time around 3200) there was some sort of a mutation with some Tiere in the past(including Sonic's ancestors) which caused them to slowly act like humans and have special abilities. The development of this process(having special abilities) made the blue blur run much faster than a normal hedgehog and also turn out to be the fastest thing alive.
